BARBADOS UNCOVERED: Exploring Global Connections Across the Atlantic World, 1640-1840
“Barbados and the Emergence of a British Caribbean Confederacy from the 17th Century to the 19th Century” presented by Dr. Cleve McD. Scott.
While the British first colonised St. Christopher (St. Kitts) it was the colonisation of Barbados that formed the basis for a British Caribbean empire. This lecture will discuss how Barbados served as a base for wider British colonisation and the expansion of the sugar plantation complex. It demonstrates how the Barbados model was replicated and, in some instances, was improved. The lecture argues that the business and familial connections that existed by the late 18th century constituted a British Caribbean confederacy that at times challenged London’s hegemony in these distant colonies.

Join us today for the next lecture in our series, BARBADOS UNCOVERED: Exploring Global Connections Across the Atlantic World, 1640-1840.
This evening’s topic: “Barbados and the Inter-Colonial Exchange with Boston, East New Jersey, and Newport,” presented by Dr. Seth Kamil.
Barbados was central to the formation of early inter-colonial trading networks within the Americas. Boston, East New Jersey, and Newport were three major entrepôts that developed sophisticated exchange systems to feed the sugar empire of Barbados and then throughout the Atlantic World. This presentation will compare the three North American regions and their economic and capital engagement with Barbados.
