To close out Senior Loneliness week, we thought we take the opportunity to highlight one of our efforts to create nourishing connections at the Parkdale Food Centre, our intergenerational meals!
These meals are a way for children, youth and older adults to come together and prepare a meal as a team. Our kitchen hosts guest chefs who guide everyone through the significance of the event or cultural milestone associated with the meal.
These events often showcase cultural performances or crafts related to the culture being celebrated. This offers valuable insights and promotes respectful appreciation of diverse heritages that we see everyday in our community and through our Neighbours!
We would love to know how you connect in your community to combat against loneliness? Share below!

How many of these food insecurity facts did you know?
More than 1 million Ontarians have visited a food bank in the last year.
A stronger economy doesn't automatically mean everyone's income is improving.
In Ottawa, most people experiencing food insecurity are working or live in households where someone is employed.
Food insecurity is rarely a short-term challenge. Many households struggle to consistently access enough food to last them months or even years.
This the reality of our community and nation. These facts scratch the surface at some of the most common misconceptions about hunger in our communities.
At Parkdale Food Centre, we see every day that food insecurity is not about individual choices. Food insecurity is shaped by rising costs, inadequate incomes, and systemic barriers that make it harder for people to thrive and meet their basic needs. By learning about your the struggles your Neighbours might be experiencing is an important step toward creating a more informed, compassionate, and food-secure community.
Which fact surprised you the most, how many did you get correct? We invite you to share your thoughts in the comments.

Happy Monday Neighbours!
This week is Senior Loneliness week. Loneliness and social isolation have become significant public health issues that impact individuals of all ages, particularly older adults.
At the Parkdale Food Centre, we strive to support connection. We believe food brings people together, and that we all have a role to play in reducing loneliness and social isolation. We do this through:
Volunteer Opportunities
Community and Intergenerational meals
Supportive community programming
(like our Support Spot, Advocacy in Motion, & Growing Futures)
We create opportunities and space for Neighbours to connect, build relationships, and feel a sense of belonging. Let’s work together to build a more connected community!

A few weeks ago, Night to Nourish brought our community together around a shared belief that everyone deserves good food, dignity, and connection.
North and Navy hosted a five course event to support their community. We are grateful to Mariposa and Juniper Farms, Dominion City, Trellis Estates, and Blumenstudio, Morrison and Co. for dedicating their time and talents to support our Neighbours and us!
Thanks to the incredible generosity of everyone who came out, Night to Nourish raised an amazing $22,500! This will be used to support our neighbours and the ongoing work to fight food insecurity in our community.
Wednesday was a reminder that connection goes beyond a meal. It is can be found in how we show up and uplift each other in community. A deep heartful thank you to North and Navy, and supporters for their continued work and for hosting such a deliciously meaningful evening. Thank you to all who came up, contributed to support us and our work in community care through food and hospitality.
We are also deeply grateful to everyone who helped bring this event to life:
North and Navy - deep appreciation to Christopher Schlesak and Adam Vettorel!
Mariposa Farms
Dominion City
Trellis Estates
Juniper Farm
Blumenstudio
Morisson and Co
This is what community looks like. Thank you for showing up for your neighbours. A very special thanks needs to be extended to Caroline Phillips for capturing the spirit of the evening so beautifully through her article: https://carolineinthecapital.ca/north-navy-and-parkdale-food-centre-put-community-on-the-menu-at-night-to-nourish/ . Thanks Caroline!
