Today at the National Military Cemetery of Canada at Beechwood, members of the 33 Combat Engineer Regiment and the 33 Combat Engineer Regiment Regimental Association gathered to honour the memory of Officer Cadet Bill Whitley, who tragically lost his life during a training exercise at CFB Chilliwack on June 20, 1988.

A wreath bearing the inscription “33 Combat Engineer Regiment” was laid at his gravesite in Section 27, followed by a moment of silence, the sounding of the Last Post and Reveille, and time for personal reflection. The ceremony served as a poignant reminder of the enduring bonds of service, sacrifice, and remembrance that unite generations of Canadian Military Engineers.

We extend our sincere thanks to Lieutenant-Colonel Kevin Ng and all members of the Regiment and Regimental Association for their continued commitment to honouring a fallen comrade.

It is a privilege for Beechwood, Canada's National Cemetery and home to the National Military Cemetery of Canada, to support this important act of remembrance.

Sous l’érable : des Canadiennes et des Canadiens se rassemblent pour rendre hommage au drapeau national à Beechwood - Beechwood Ottawa 06/19/2026

On the evening of June 17, Canadians gathered at Beechwood Cemetery, Canada’s National Cemetery, for the Second Annual Under the Maple Leaf – Respecting the Canadian Flag Ceremony.

What began as a simple idea to provide Canadians with a dignified way to retire worn and weathered flags has quickly evolved into a growing national tradition. This year, flags arrived from communities across Canada and from Canadians living abroad, each carrying its own story and representing a unique connection to our country.

Held at the National Military Cemetery of Canada, the ceremony brought together veterans, serving members of the Canadian Armed Forces, families, community leaders, and citizens from all walks of life to reflect on the meaning of Canada’s most recognized national symbol.

Tonight at Beechwood Cemetery 🇨🇦

A flag is more than fabric.

It flies over our homes, our schools, our military bases, our embassies, and our places of remembrance. It represents the people, values, and stories that unite us as Canadians.

This evening, join us at the National Military Cemetery of Canada for the Second Annual Under the Maple Leaf – Respecting the Canadian Flag ceremony.

Together, we will pay tribute to Canadian and provincial flags that have reached the end of their service through a dignified retirement ceremony that reflects the respect they deserve. The program will include a ceremonial procession, military participation, the retirement of flags, and the raising of a new National Flag of Canada.
