"What the Turtle Showed Her That Night"

A Vision of the Whole Land
She climbed until there was no more climbing.
The land laid itself down
like an open hand
that had been closed too long,
and the Turtle lifted his head
out of the spaces between things.

Look, he said. This is what you came back for.
And he opened his shell
the way a grandmother opens her arms,
and inside was every river
she had ever been thirsty for,
every mountain her grandfathers had named,
every forest the maps had tried to forget.

The Eagle came. The Wolf came.
The Bear, the Salmon, the Raven,
the Beaver, the Buffalo β€”
all the old relatives gathered.
And the woman did not weep.
She only set her staff down
when she believed the ground would hold her.
