In 1971, the United States almost had universal child care.
Congress passed a bill that would have funded a nationwide network of public child care centers.
Then President Nixon vetoed it — warning it would lead to “communal child-rearing.”
Instead, the work of caring for children stayed private, pushed back into families and done largely by women, often without pay.
More than 50 years later, we’re still living with the consequences.
At our panel, we’ll look at what happened in 1971 and what it can teach us about the fight today.
