Official Study Tour Engagements in Berlin

As part of the Study Tour of the North West Legislature delegation, the Embassy represented by Political Counsellor Ms. Cooper and assisted by Mr. Mueller-Rust (Political Section, LRP) facilitated valuable exchanges aimed at strengthening cooperation and building bridges with local government and parliamentary institutions in Berlin.

We were honoured to participate in an insightful engagement with State Secretary Mr. Andreas Kraus from the Berlin Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment. The delegation also benefited from an in-depth presentation by Ms. Anna Friedrich from the Rainwater Agency Berlin on Decentralized Stormwater Management in Berlin: Challenges, Politics and Participation, which provided valuable perspectives on innovative and sustainable approaches to urban water management.

Furthermore, we had the opportunity to engage with local parliamentarians, including Lucas Schaal and members of the Parliamentary Committee for Mobility. These discussions offered important insights into shared policy priorities, governance approaches, and opportunities for future collaboration.

The programme concluded with a guided tour of the Berlin Parliament, providing the delegation with a deeper understanding of the legislative processes and institutional framework of the city-state.

We extend our sincere appreciation to all our hosts and partners for their warm hospitality and for sharing their expertise and experiences. Such exchanges play an important role in fostering international cooperation, knowledge-sharing, and sustainable development.

Last week, we had the honour of receiving a delegation from the North-West Provincial Legislature on a study tour led by the Portfolio Committee on Public Works and Roads.

The visit began with a courtesy call at the Embassy, where the delegation was received by Mr Andries Oosthuizen, Chargé d’Affaires. From there, the Embassy facilitated a rich and diverse programme focused on infrastructure, urban development, and sustainable water and road management.

Highlights included participation in the BUGG World Congress, followed by an insightful exchange with the Bundesstiftung Bauakademie, including a guided tour of the exhibition “Treffpunkt Bauwende” with Mr. Achim Wollschläger (Foundation Representative), Antonia Diel (Transformation Manager for Climate Change and Circular City), and Lea Luzzi (Officer for Coordination, Strategy and International Partnerships).

A key technical highlight was an in-depth presentation by Prof. Sieker, Honorary Professor for Urban Hydrology at the TU Berlin on decentralized road drainage systems, covering:

- planning tools for decentralized stormwater management
-technical concepts of sustainable road drainage
-planning and regulatory frameworks
lessons learned from practical implementation in urban contexts

The exchange offered valuable insights into innovative approaches to resilient infrastructure planning and sustainable public works, strengthening dialogue between South Africa and Germany in this important sector.
