PUERTA DE LA MAR ILLUMINATED IN PH COLORS AS FILIPINOS IN VALENCIA MARK 128TH PH INDEPENDENCE DAY

VALENCIA, 15 June 2026 - The iconic Puerta de la Mar (Gate of the Sea) monument in the heart of Valencia city was illuminated in the colors of the Philippine flag on the evening of 13 June 2026, serving as a striking tribute to the 128th Philippine Independence Day and the enduring friendship between the Philippines and Spain.

The symbolic lighting ceremony formed part of a broader program of activities organized by the Filipino community in Valencia in coordination with the Philippine Honorary Consulate in Valencia, headed by Honorary Consul Manuel Carrión Sánchez, to celebrate both Philippine Independence Day and the 24th Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day.

The event brought together members of the Filipino community, local authorities, and friends of the Philippines in a display of solidarity and shared heritage. Among those in attendance were Mr. José Tàrrega, Director-General for Citizen Participation of the Valencian Regional Government, and Mr. Julio Aguado, representing the Mayor of Valencia.

Bathed in blue, red, and yellow, the historic monument stood as a visible symbol of the strong people-to-people ties and growing cooperation between the Philippines and Spain. The illumination also underscored Valencia's recognition of the contributions of the Filipino community to the region and reflected the longstanding friendship between the two nations.

The original Puerta de la Mar was one of the principal gates of Valencia's medieval walls. It served as the gateway connecting Valencia to its port and the Mediterranean. Through this gate passed merchants, travelers, diplomats, soldiers, and goods arriving from across the Mediterranean and beyond.

Although the original gate was demolished in the 19th century as part of the dismantling of Valencia's city walls, the current monument was built in the 1940s to commemorate its historical importance and preserve its memory.

Today, the Puerta de la Mar symbolizes Valencia's maritime identity, the city's historic openness to international trade and cultural exchange, the connection between Valencia and the wider Mediterranean world, and the movement of peoples, ideas, and commerce across seas.

The lighting of the Puerta de la Mar in Philippine flag colors is particularly meaningful. The Philippines and Spain were connected for centuries through maritime routes, most notably through the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade, which linked Asia, Europe, and the Americas. As a monument associated with a city's connection to the sea and to distant lands, Puerta de la Mar serves as a fitting backdrop for celebrating Philippine-Spanish friendship.
A Barrio Fiesta took place the following day at the Polideportivo de Nazaret, gathering families, community leaders, and guests for a cultural program centered on the themes of “Kalayaan, Kinabukasan, Kasaysayan”. The program featured performances and community activities that showcased Filipino identity, traditions, and unity within the diaspora.

The Philippine Honorary Consulate in Valencia, together with the Filipino community organizations, expressed gratitude to the local government of Valencia and all participating partners for their continued support in strengthening cultural ties and promoting mutual understanding between the Philippines and Spain.
The celebrations reflect the Filipino community’s commitment to preserving heritage while fostering friendship and collaboration in their adopted home. END
