The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Suva congratulates the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Paris on this achievement.
Indonesia has been elected as a member of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) for 2026โ2030.
The decision was adopted during the 11th General Assembly of the States Parties to the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.
Indonesia secured its seat after a competitive election within Group IV (Asia-Pacific), where four countries were elected from six candidates. Alongside Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, and Cambodia were also elected.
This achievement was made possible through intensive lobbying and diplomatic efforts by the Delegation of the Republic of Indonesia, along with strong support from friendly nations. The confidence placed in Indonesia reflects its steadfast commitment to safeguarding culture sustainably.
Ambassador of Indonesia to France and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, Mohamad Oemar, stated that this achievement is a great responsibility Indonesia will undertake with full dedication.
He emphasized that throughout 2026โ2030, Indonesia remains committed to contributing to global policymaking on cultural safeguarding, promoting inclusive implementation of the 2003 Convention, and strengthening local communities' capacities.
Deputy Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, I Gusti Agung Ketut Satrya Wibawa, added that Indonesia will optimize its strategic position to advance developing countries' interests in safeguarding cultural heritage.
The Committee is an exclusive body of 24 members elected from 185 States Parties to the 2003 Convention. It evaluates and inscribes elements on UNESCO's ICH Lists and formulates policy guidance for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage worldwide.
