Turkmenistan’s intangible cultural heritage reflects centuries of cultural exchange and creativity shaped by its historical role along the Silk Road and at the crossroads of civilizations. The country’s living heritage includes:
• oral traditions and epic storytelling;
• traditional music and performing arts;
• craftsmanship and traditional knowledge;
• social practices, rituals, and festive events;
• traditional skills related to carpet weaving and handicrafts.
These traditions continue to be transmitted from generation to generation with the active involvement of local communities, practitioners, and cultural institutions.
Turkmenistan has purposefully moved toward saveguarding its intangible heritage elements, as well as registering them at the national and international level.
For this purpose, in august 2014, the Ministry of Culture of Turkmenistan established the Department of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The duties of this Department include identifying and documenting heritage elements, categorizing and compiling the National Inventory, promoting education and intergenerational transmission, preparing files for global registration, and organizing festivals and promotional programs.
Between 2015 and 2026, this office has registered more than 150 elements of intangible heritage at the national level.

During the meeting, the sides expressed satisfaction with the high level and strategic nature of the long-standing partnership between Turkmenistan and the United Nations and its specialized agencies.

Turkmen Delegation Participated in the Meeting of the Group of Friends of Global Governance in New York
On May 28, 2026, the delegation of Turkmenistan headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs took part in the meeting of the Group of Friends of Global Governance in New York on the theme “Reforming and Improving Global Governance, Working Together to Address Global Challenges”.
During his speech, the head of Turkmenistan’s foreign ministry expressed gratitude to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, Wang Yi, for the invitation to the meeting and noted that Turkmenistan supports the Global Governance Initiative put forward by President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping on September 1, 2025, at the SCO Summit. Turkmenistan views its accession to the Group of Friends as an important platform for promoting this initiative within the United Nations.
Within the framework of implementing the Global Governance Initiative, the Turkmen side presented four key practical proposals. The first proposal concerns the transition to preventive governance: Turkmenistan put forward an initiative to establish a Multilateral Platform for Preventive Governance aimed at the early prevention of conflicts and crises.
The second direction focuses on strengthening the international legal framework: in this regard, Turkmenistan is actively promoting at the United Nations the initiative to proclaim 2028 as the International Year of Law, which is intended to become a platform for broad dialogue on the role of law amid global transformations.
The third proposal addresses data reliability and digitalization, emphasizing the importance of using verified data for managerial decision-making. In this connection, Turkmenistan advocates the introduction of universal principles of data reliability and joint mechanisms for their verification.
The fourth aspect highlights practical implementation and inclusiveness, stressing that the effectiveness of global governance is measured by its ability to solve concrete problems on the basis of trust and inclusiveness.
