South Tynedale Railway

Welcome to the South Tynedale Railway. Enjoy a scenic ride along the valley.

Running northwards from Alston in Cumbria, England's highest market town, the narrow gauge South Tynedale Railway crosses into Northumberland to a temporary terminus at Lintley. Its heritage steam and diesel trains run through lovely valley scenery with the high moors of the Pennines on either side. Very soon we will start to rebuild the tracks onwards from Lintley to the Northumbrian village of S

Help support the team at the Black Bull in Haltwhistle on their adventure.

The team from the Black Bull in Haltwhistle are taking on the adventure of a lifetime as they compete in the Monte Carlo or Bust Banger Rally – all in support of the incredible South Tynedale Railway Preservation Society.

Our trusty rally car has been transformed into none other than Thomas the Tank Engine, and we’ll be driving hundreds of miles across Europe in a vehicle that’s worth more in memories than in money! The challenge is simple: get from the UK to Monte Carlo in an old banger, overcoming breakdowns, wrong turns, and whatever else the roads can throw at us.

But this journey is about much more than the rally itself. We’re raising funds to support the preservation and future development of the South Tynedale Railway, a much-loved heritage railway that plays an important role in our local community, preserving railway history and creating unforgettable experiences for visitors of all ages.

Especially raising funds to restore “Barber” built in 1908 by Thomas Green & Sons and worked at the Harrogate Gas Works. There are 2 of these unique engines left. South Tynedale Railway are also looking to convert a Saloon/Braking Coach to allow those with mobility issues unlimited access.

Every donation, no matter how big or small, will help us support this fantastic cause while cheering us on as we attempt to get Thomas all the way to Monte Carlo!

Please donate if you can, share our page, and follow our journey as we prove that with enough determination (and perhaps a little steam power!), anything is possible.
