Last week's training day at the Community Skills Centre on VINCI Building UK’s Ministry of Defence office development in Blackpool was exactly the kind of partnership we believe the industry needs more of. Bringing passive fire protection onto a live project gives learners a genuine look at what goes into keeping a building safe, not just a classroom overview.
We brought mock walls to site, walked through basic fire stopping details and then let the students get hands on with some of the tasks our operatives carry out every day. The goal is to make construction feel real and achievable rather than distant or intimidating.
All of the young people involved get to have the time with industry professionals and potential employers on a live site, to help them see what industry standards are, understand expectations and start to picture themselves in a specialist trade like passive fire protection if they choose to go down that route.
If days like this help even a handful of learners see a future in construction and take that first step towards training or a CSCS card, that is time well spent for everyone involved.
Social value has to translate into real opportunities. We see these sessions as the start of a journey into work, where taster days can lead to further training, work experience and, in time, employment within passive fire protection and the wider supply chain.
Thank you for including JM Passive Fire Protection in this programme and for the opportunity to collaborate with: Muse, VINCI Building UK, UK Ministry of Defence, Blackpool Council, The Platform | Blackpool, Blackpool and The Fylde College, Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

There is far more awareness of passive fire protection than there was a few years ago. The real issue is whether that awareness is turning into action on site.
Knowing fire protection matters is one thing. Planning for it properly, sequencing it correctly and appointing the right people to deliver it is another.
The industry has moved forward, but the projects that perform best are the ones where standards, application and accountability are taken seriously from the outset.
Fire protection is built into the fabric of a building. Once completed, it needs to be done right.

Getting a job over the line is always a team effort. The main contractor, the specialists, the suppliers and the people on site all play their part.
For a small specialist business, payment terms are not a line in a contract. They are how we plan cash flow, pay our teams and keep materials moving. We put our applications in on time, we get payment certificates through, and we still see money arrive late more often than it should.
When that happens, it is not just numbers on a screen. It slows the whole wheel down. Suppliers do not wait forever. Operatives still need paying. The people doing the work feel the impact long before it shows up in a board report.
Most of our clients do the right thing and honour the agreement. That is all we are asking for across the industry stick to what has been signed, respect the work that has been done and keep the trust going both ways.
Has late payment been a challenge on your projects recently?

If the job needs a specialist, hire a specialist.
Some scopes on a construction project can be picked up by any competent team. Passive fire protection is not one of them.
When the detail matters, the margin for error is smaller. Standards, sequencing, access and compliance all need proper specialist input from the start.
We still see niche packages treated as easy to absorb or easy to sort later. In reality, that approach usually creates rework, delays and unnecessary risk.
In specialist trades, experience is not an added extra. It is part of the core job.

New duties around residential evacuation planning came into force on 6 April 2026.
But an evacuation plan is only as reliable as the building it is built around.
Passive fire compartmentation is what gives evacuation time its structure. When it is missing or incorrectly installed, the time people have to get out becomes unreliable.
No plan accounts for that.
If you are working on residential schemes and want to talk through your passive fire requirements, get in touch.

The fire safety sector is under more scrutiny than it has been in a generation. Good.
The Building Safety Act, the Golden Thread, the Building Safety Regulator. The pressure on contractors to demonstrate genuine compliance, not just workable paperwork, has never been higher.
This is the environment we have always operated in. Third-party certified, fully documented, records in place from day one.

On every project we deliver, quality checks happen throughout not just at the end.
Whether it's intumescent painting or firestopping, every stage of our work is recorded. Photos are taken, checks are documented, and sign-offs are completed as the work progresses. Nothing is assembled retrospectively or left to memory at handover.
This approach matters for a few reasons. It gives clients clear, ongoing evidence that work is being carried out correctly and to specification. It supports the Golden Thread requirements under the Building Safety Act. And it means that if questions arise months or years down the line, there's a complete, traceable record to refer back to.
Quality isn't something we add at the end. It's built into how we work from day one.

Managing multiple passive fire protection specialists across a single project adds complexity, creates coordination risk, and introduces gaps in accountability.
We deliver across all scopes of passive fire protection, intumescent painting, fire stopping, cavity barriers, structural steel boarding, fire doors, and compartmentation surveys. Every scope is covered by full third-party certification, giving clients one auditable, accredited contractor across the entire passive fire protection package.
For main contractors and developers, that means fewer interfaces to manage, cleaner documentation at handover, and a consistent standard of work from the same team throughout the project lifecycle.
We're actively taking on new enquiries and would welcome the opportunity to discuss upcoming schemes in your pipeline.

The Building Safety Act has changed the way fire protection records need to be managed, and it's affecting live projects right now.
The "Golden Thread" requirement means a complete, accurate, and accessible record of every fire safety measure must be maintained throughout a building's life. For passive fire protection, that includes what systems were installed, to what specification, using what products, and photographic evidence of correct installation, before anything is closed in.
This isn't a handover document. It's a live obligation. The Building Safety Regulator can decline to sign off higher-risk buildings where this information is missing or incomplete. Undocumented work, regardless of installation quality, is treated as non-compliant.
For principal contractors, that means the passive fire protection specialist you appoint needs to operate to the same documentation standard you do. Daily records, photo evidence, and structured sign-off processes aren't optional extras on these projects, they're a requirement.
It's worth having that conversation early. Not at handover.
