New data shows the UK economy is ~6% smaller post-Brexit. But what does that mean for businesses on the ground?

This week, insights highlighted by BBC News and Bank of England data reinforced something many in our region already know:

Growth has been held back by uncertainty and increased trade friction.

At the Liverpool Welcomes Europe event at the Hilton Liverpool City Centre (18 June), we brought this data to life through real business experience.

Across roundtables in: Manufacturing, Health & Life Sciences, Digital & Creative

…the message was strikingly consistent.

Businesses are not asking for perfection - they are asking for:

· Simpler processes

· Greater regulatory alignment

· Less friction at borders

· Clearer frameworks for data, talent and collaboration

From customs paperwork and rules of origin to compliance challenges (especially in chemicals), to duplicated approvals in life sciences and to work permits - these are practical barriers affecting day-to-day trade.

Encouragingly, we were joined by EU trade representatives, civic leaders, consuls and honorary consuls, all reinforcing a shared ambition: Stronger ties between European and UK business communities.

And despite the challenges? Liverpool businesses continue to adapt, innovate, and trade.

Looking ahead to the EU–UK Summit on 22 July in Brussels, the ask from our business community is clear:

➡️ Reduce friction

➡️ Improve alignment

➡️ Make it easier to trade and grow

Liverpool is stepping forward as a globally connected, outward-looking city, committed to maintaining and strengthening its relationship with Europe.

Things are starting to build with our Chamber fundraiser with Cash for Kids Liverpool & North Wales and we’re beginning to see which businesses are signing up.

For anyone who hasn’t come across it yet, here’s how it works.

Cash for Kids fund local organisations so they can support children and families with essentials and services.

Chamber businesses are each signing up to contribute £200, which will form a shared fund and be distributed locally.

Everyone who takes part is also entered into a draw towards their Chamber membership.

We’ll start sharing who’s involved over the next few days.

When we first spoke to Cash for Kids Liverpool & North Wales, the thing that stood out was how direct everything is.

They don’t create their own services - they work with schools, local charities and community groups who already know where support is needed.

Those organisations flag the need, apply for funding, and Cash for Kids step in so they can act quickly. That might be covering food, helping with essentials, or supporting young people through difficult situations.

This fundraiser feeds into that process.

Each £200 contribution from a Chamber business goes into a shared local fund, which is then distributed through those organisations. Businesses can sign up throughout June before fundraising begins in July.

It’s a simple route from business to impact and a good example of how membership isn’t just about events, it’s about being part of a network that can do something together.

As mentioned at Friday’s Well Connected event, we’ve recently launched our fundraising campaign with Cash for Kids Liverpool & North Wales 💜

Their work supports children and young people across our Liverpool City Region with money raised locally going directly back into our communities to help families who need it most.

While we were there, we caught up with Emily Maher from the Cash for Kids team to hear more about the real impact behind the fundraising.

“I see the real impact first hand and want as many people as I can in our city, supporting these children that need it the most”

From essential support for families to funding grassroots organisations, fundraising plays a vital role in changing young lives.
