Eritrean Nationals in the UK Commemorate Martyrs Day!
On Saturday, June 20, 2026, Eritrean communities across the UK—including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield, Nottingham, Glasgow, Southampton, Middlesbrough, Brighton, Bristol, Cardiff, and Coventry—gathered to commemorate Martyrs Day with a candlelight vigil. In London, the event took place at Kennington Park and was organised by the Sponsor Martyrs Family Committee (SMFC). The program began at 5:00 PM with a moment of silence in honour of all those who sacrificed their lives for the liberty and sovereignty of Eritrea.
The program featured singing, poetry readings, and speeches. Present at the London commemoration were Mr Salih Abdella, Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of the State of Eritrea to the UK and Ireland, along with embassy staff, religious leaders, and over 3,800 Eritreans and friends of Eritrea. During the opening ceremony, Mr Petros Berhe, a member of the organising committee, delivered a speech highlighting the precious gift our martyrs have given to all Eritreans. He emphasised that it is the responsibility of every citizen to preserve and develop the nation, forged through the sacrifices of its sons and daughters, and urged nationals to strengthen their contributions to the Martyrs Trust Fund.
Mr Salih Abdella, the Guest of Honour, reminded the attendees that it is the responsibility of each Eritrean to support the families of those who were martyred in the fight for Eritrea's liberation, as well as those who gave their lives defending the country. He stated that the prevailing peace and stability in Eritrea is the result of the significant sacrifices made and stressed that every citizen has a duty to assist the children and families of martyrs. Mr Abdella also called for increased participation by Eritreans in the country's development activities. In his final remarks, he emphasised that honouring our martyrs goes beyond lighting candles and planting trees; it is about building the nation for which they paid the ultimate price. He noted that Martyrs Day is an occasion for the Eritrean people to commemorate their fallen heroes with pride and dignity, asserting that supporting martyrs’ families is a collective responsibility shared by both the government and the public.
Following his address, Mr Salih Abdella participated in lighting candles in memory of those who sacrificed their lives for Eritrea's future. The event also included music and poetry reflecting the hardships Eritreans endured during the colonial period. The SMFC took this opportunity to encourage more Eritreans to "Sponsor a Martyr’s Family." Performances by Eritrean artists from London featured various national songs and those from the liberation struggle era, alongside poems that conveyed the values of our heritage to the younger generation. The youth choir also presented nationalist songs from the liberation period, evoking strong emotions among participants. The day concluded with the singing of the Eritrean National Anthem.

Asmara, 18 June 2026- The Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare announced that, from 2004 to 2025, the Government of Eritrea disbursed over 6.2 billion Nakfa in support of families of martyrs.
Noting that the Government of Eritrea began extending support to families of martyrs in 1995, Mr Zerai Tekleab, Director of Families of Martyrs’ Welfare at the Ministry, said that, initially, 10,000 Nakfa was distributed to the families of martyrs for each martyr.
Mr Zerai went on to say that, following the issuance of Proclamation No. 137/2003, aimed at sustainably extending support to families of martyrs, 500 Nakfa has been distributed monthly to each martyr's family since January 2004.
Mr Zerai also said that, as part of efforts to enable families of martyrs to become self-supportive, over 27 million Nakfa has been invested in rehabilitating families of martyrs through livestock and small-scale trade activities.
Regarding the contribution of nationals inside the country and abroad, Mr Zerai said that every national in the Diaspora has taken the initiative to contribute 720 US dollars over two years, while others have assumed the responsibility of permanently supporting individual families of martyrs.
Mr Zerai indicated that over the past 22 years, nationals inside the country and abroad have contributed over 202 million Nakfa, benefiting 24 thousand 545 families of martyrs.
Noting that nationals inside the country, including students, Government and PFDJ workers, as well as associations, are making valuable contributions in support of families of martyrs, Mr Zerai called on every citizen to follow the noble initiative.

Every year on the 20th of June, Eritreans both in the country and around the world remember the sacrifices of their fallen brothers and sisters. This day is especially significant for all nationals worldwide. Martyr’s Day resonates with every segment of society—young and old alike—as every family has likely lost at least one member. Some may wonder why it is important to remember those who have passed. It is not solely about remembrance; it is about paying tribute to the heavy sacrifices made to secure a future for generations to come, ultimately achieving independence and the right to self-determination for the people. A nation that is born from its heroes cannot be forgotten, and the 20th of June continues to unite society. On June 19th, all Eritreans will gather at home, on the streets, and at work to light candles while watching documentaries on EriTV. After a few hours of rest, they will come together at 5:30 AM on Tuesday, June 20th, at the Martyrs' Cemetery. Eritreans around the world will also participate in remembrance events; for instance, in London, the event will take place at Kennington Park Road, SE11 4BE, starting at 3:00 PM. This year marks another occasion to honour Eritrea’s fallen heroes, reflect on their sacrifices, and acknowledge the responsibilities borne by every citizen.
The song accompanying the video clip is a rearranged version of music originally composed and performed by one of Eritrea’s fallen heroes, Michael Meles, the older brother of the legendary singer Helen Meles. It is a remembrance filled with pride and gratitude rather than mourning, allowing our fallen heroes to rest in peace.
Eternal Glory to our Martyrs!
