What is โ€œretrofitโ€?๐Ÿ’ก

This Climate Action Week, weโ€™re explaining technical climate terms.

Retrofit is not just about keeping homes warm, itโ€™s about keeping them cool, especially during heatwaves.

Preparing our homes and buildings for the future, is a priority for us ๐ŸŒ

24/06/2026

The housing system is broken ๐Ÿš๏ธ and new rules risk making it worse.

Developers could deliver as little as 20% affordable housing with no explanation โŒ

Right now, 10,500 Lewisham families are on the housing waiting list and 2,450 in temporary accommodation โ€” all waiting for a secure, affordable home.

So weโ€™re taking action โš–๏ธ

Alongside Hackney and Tower Hamlets, with support from 4 other councils, weโ€™re challenging the Mayorโ€™s decision to push for more affordable homes, not fewer ๐Ÿ—๏ธ

24/06/2026

Our crews will be starting 30 minutes earlier to help avoid the high temperatures โ˜€๏ธ

Please help by putting your bins out by 5:30am.

We know most people put their bins out the night before, but if you have neighbours, friends or family on shift patterns, please help each other out and share the message. Thank you ๐Ÿคฉ

It's hot out there, Lewisham.

The Mayor shares advice on staying safe during the heatwave and highlights some of the ways we're supporting residents through the hot weather.

๐ŸŒณ Need somewhere cooler to spend time? Our libraries are open as Cool Spaces.
๐Ÿ’š We're checking in on vulnerable residents who may need extra support.
๐Ÿš› Waste and recycling crews are starting collections earlier to help keep staff safe in the heat.

A few simple things can make a big difference:
๐Ÿ’ง Drink plenty of water
โ˜€๏ธ Avoid the sun between 11amโ€“3pm
๐Ÿ  Keep blinds closed during the hottest part of the day
๐Ÿ‘‹ Check in on older neighbours, young children and anyone with health conditions.

Please take care of yourselves and look out for one another. Together we can help everyone stay safe and well during this hot spell.

Help someone you see sleeping rough in the summer heat by contacting StreetLink.

โ˜€๏ธ SWEP activated. Temperatures rising. Help protect someone sleeping rough.

High temperatures are forecast across parts of the UK this week, and many local authorities have activated SWEP to support people at risk during extreme weather.
