🏥 Celebrating 60 years of pioneering liver care at King’s.
From 11 to 12 June, world-leading experts from King’s College Hospital, King's College London, and the Roger Williams Institute of Liver Studies joined with international specialists and patients to mark the legacy of six decades of liver research and innovative care.
Since the opening of the world’s first specialist liver intensive care ward in 1970, the development of liver transplantation in 1989 and, in 1998, successfully introducing a programme of split liver transplantation, we have been at the forefront of numerous international breakthroughs in liver medicine.
During the two-day event, clinicians, scientists and patients reflected on the impact of liver research at King’s, resulting in transformations within clinical practice, and reviewed the latest scientific developments which could be the next step in cutting-edge treatment.
Specialists also heard from patients affected by liver disease and heard their priorities for improving care and treatment.
Martin Scampion, 65, is one King’s patient who has first-hand experience of life-saving care. He said:
“I was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2024, which came as a huge shock. I started cancer treatment, but after a few months, I developed cirrhosis, as well as chronic pancreatitis. I was waitlisted for a liver transplant in early 2025, and a few weeks later I had the call to say a liver was ready for me.
”The staff at King’s were fantastic, every person I met was great at their job. It was incredible to see the team of liver coordinators, nurses, consultants, admin staff and volunteers all going above and beyond to look after me. Thanks to everyone’s support, I’m able to make the most of life again.”

🦵 with the Tissue Viability Team at King's.
Yesterday, our teams hosted a drop-in session for Legs Matter Week at King’s College Hospital. Over 200 staff, patients, and visitors joined to learn about effective leg and foot care.
Our brilliant Tissue Viability Team - Hannah Wicheard, Mairéad Beharie, Viv Turner, and Ailyn Rimando - led the day. They partnered with the Orthoplastics and Diabetic Foot Teams at King’s, alongside other healthcare companies. Together, they shared helpful learning tips and live demonstrations.
The session highlighted best practices in lower-limb management. Patients and visitors were provided with clear guides on how to find local care resources for their families.
💬 Hearing from our team, Ailyn Rimando, Tissue Viability Nurse at King’s College Hospital and event lead, said:
"The focus of the event was to educate staff, visitors, and patients on the vital importance of good leg care. Across the UK, far too many people continue to suffer avoidable pain, delayed wound healing, preventable deterioration, and increasingly complex care needs, all linked to poor lower limb care. By raising awareness and sharing practical knowledge, we aim to empower people to take action earlier and improve outcomes."

🏥 Inspiring the next generation of NHS leaders at King's.
We were thrilled to host another brilliant group of students from Jessop Primary School at King’s College Hospital.
The young visitors explored the incredible variety of careers that keep our hospital running. As part of our King’s Young Ambassadors Programme, they went behind the scenes to learn about roles they might not otherwise see.
During the interactive morning, the students:
🩺 Took part in a demonstration on prepping a patient for a surgical procedure.
🛡️ Tried on security team protective equipment.
🧼 Learned how to stop the spread of infection in a busy ward.
💊 Discovered different roles behind the scenes in a hospital
Thank you to Jessop Primary School and to all our amazing teams who shared their passion and expertise.
