Religion comes up a lot these days, so it's important we talk about it. If you take religion out of a code of ethics, you risk taking the entire sense of purpose out too. Things can seem a bit cold, and meaningless if you do that. (You also risk devolving society into the confused cesspit much of Britain's become; which can see women legally self-aborting right up to the point of birth, and half-naked drag queens slut-dropping in front of babies: http://youtube.com/watch?v=LnVMEukXBjw )
I'm a secular agnostic, and survival-based utilitarian. I believe in the theory of evolution, and support the work of for instance Richard Dawkins in challenging peoples' assumptions about creationism, and encouraging them to think critically about what they are taught.
With that said-
You can't just s**t on Britain's Christian heritage and expect no resistance; it's at the centre of much of our calendar year (Christmas, Easter, the Churches, architecture, more of our moral frameworks than we probably even realise).
Below is a reply I just posted on how I believe religion could someday be reconciled with a more progressive, forward-thinking, objective and ultimately safe code of ethics, and how that could also relate to the laws of the land- the net result being, prioritisation of native lives, and the minimisation of unnecessary suffering therein.
