We are an almshouse, home to a vibrant community, as well as a heritage site dating back to 1348. We look forward to welcoming you.

The Charterhouse has been living the nation’s history since 1348. Founded as a medieval monastery of the Carthusian order, the site became a Tudor mansion, a boys’ school, and an almshouse, which it remains to this day. We provide accommodation for over 40 individuals known as ‘Brothers’ who form part of the community alongside staff, private and commercial tenants, and residents of the Infirmary.

What can two German Charterhouses help tell us about the London Charterhouse?

A recent research trip to Germany’s exceptionally well-preserved Prüll (Regensburg) and Marienzelle (Nürnberg) Charterhouses offered DPhil researcher Vikki Sands a chance to compare surviving architecture, from intact monks' cells to the subtle geometry of cell serving hatches.

Read her latest blog post to discover how they are helping to shape her understanding of urban Carthusian life and the shared history linking these sites.

Join us on Monday, 6 July at 5:30pm for a special Evensong in our Chapel to mark the 400th anniversary of poet and scholar John Donne becoming a Governor of the Charterhouse.

We are delighted to welcome the Dean of St Paul’s Cathedral, Andrew Tremlett, to mark the occasion.

As a Governor, Donne would have attended meetings in our Great Chamber and services in the Chapel. He also served as Dean of St Paul's during his lifetime, so it is wonderful to welcome his modern-day successor to the Charterhouse for this commemoration.

No booking required - all are very welcome to join us for this historic commemoration.

Resident Tim spotted a beautiful full moon through his window and took this lovely, atmospheric photo.

Although it was taken at night, the adjustment for the bright moonlight lit up the sky and along with the night shadows creates a rather dream-like effect.

A spot of thunder and a torrential downpour? Nothing we couldn't handle.

Our thanks and congratulations to in the Squares for a wonderful performance Wednesday night, delivered with admirable perseverance despite the distinctly un-summery weather.

We are equally grateful to the audience, who showed excellent grit in enduring the 'inclement' conditions.

It seems it takes more than a British summer to keep a theatre crowd away!

Resident Deborah recently took some beautiful photos of the stunning peonies that are flowering in the gardens right now. We love this particular shot and think the visiting bee makes it look a bit like a classic Chinese painting.

In Chinese art, the peony is celebrated as the "King of Flowers," symbolising prosperity, honour, and wealth. When an artist pairs these flowers with something like a bee, it adds a layer of shengdong - a term meaning "dynamic life" - to the artwork.

Deborah’s photograph perfectly captures that same sense of vitality!
