It was our pleasure to be part of this year’s
London Festival of Architecture presenting our exhibition on the Bata phenomenon ‘Desire to Create’, accompanied by a panel discussion titled ‘Designed to Belong: Modernism, Industry and Community’, which took place last night at the cinema of Czech Embassy London.

Speakers featuring architectural historian Gillian Darley OBE, economic historian Milan Balaban, architect Ondřej Chybík, and John Purkiss from the Bata Heritage Centre explored how architecture shapes our sense of belonging, and much more. Chaired by Sir John Tusa, whose father was the first Manager of the Bata estate in East Tilbury.

Huge thanks to all our panelists for their valuable insights. Special thanks also goes to Thomas G. Bata, the grandson of the founder of the Bata company, Tomáš Baťa, who opened the evening sharing stories from his childhood and running the Bata company. Last but not least, thanks to our attentive and curious audience ✨

Tonight we had the pleasure of hosting an inspiring panel discussion as part of the London Festival of Architecture!

Thank you Czech Embassy London for providing the venue and for your continuous support.

The evening explored how architecture, industry, and community shape our sense of belonging, using the remarkable story of the Baťa settlement in East Tilbury as a starting point.

Introduced by our director Tereza Šídlová, the panel was chaired by Sir John Tusa, who led a fascinating conversation with architectural historian Gillian Darley OBE, economic historian Milan Balaban, architect Ondřej Chybík, and John Purkiss from the Bata Heritage Centre.

We were also delighted to welcome Thomas G. Bata, former Chairman of the Bata Group and grandson of Tomáš Baťa, founder of the world-renowned Baťa company.

Many thanks to all our speakers and to our lovely audience 🙏
