Tackling the climate emergency means making it easier for people to choose cleaner ways to travel. 🌱

This London Climate Action Week, we're highlighting some of the action happening across Tower Hamlets.

Today: EV charging infrastructure ⚑

We're continuing to expand our network of charge points, supporting the transition to electric vehicles and helping to reduce emissions and improve air quality across the borough.

Together, we're building a greener Tower Hamlets.

We all know how hard it is to find an affordable home in London right now. That’s why we are taking action with Hackney and Lewisham to challenge plans to cut affordable housing from 35% to 20%.

Seven councils are now backing this - because the stakes couldn’t be higher:

β€’ Over 1 million Londoners are living in overcrowded or unsafe homes
β€’ 90,000 children are homeless and in temporary accommodation
β€’ Waiting lists for social housing are at a 10-year high

Local leaders are standing up to protect the homes Londoners need - so families can stay in their communities and build their futures here.

This is about putting people before profit πŸ’›

Good luck to England in the Men's Football World Cup today - but that also means an increase in domestic abuse. We know football doesn’t cause domestic abuse, but it can be used as an excuse for it. Let’s stand together against domestic abuse.

Shadwell Basin is a dangerous place to swim and people have drowned. The water is very cold and deep, and there are hidden obstacles.

There are safer places to swim:

β€’ Sea Lanes Canary Wharf
β€’ York Hall Swimming Pool – which is FREE for women and men over 35
β€’ Parliament Hill Lido
β€’ Hampstead Heath ponds

You are putting your life, and the lives of those with you, in danger if you try to swim at Shadwell. You could also be fined Β£100. Tower Hamlets Enforcement Officers will be patrolling.

If you see someone in trouble, call 999. If you get into trouble anywhere in water, remember to lie on your back and float to live. See the RNLI campaign here: https://orlo.uk/IVjmu

Last week, our independent travel team ran a series of training sessions to support young people with SEND to travel safely to school.

Children were taken through travel tips on crossing roads safely, as well as catching the bus.

Delivered in partnership with the Met and TfL, these sessions are a great example of how we’re working to empower children and young people with essential real-life skills.
