Today we were delighted to welcome back some guide dog puppies in training to the station.

It was a pleasure to see these young pups learning about and reacting to our fire appliance and station environment. Everything was a new experience for them, from the different sights, sounds and smells, to the noises associated with a fire engine and the equipment we use every day.

The puppies also enjoyed exploring the station, helping to build their confidence and giving them valuable exposure to new environments as part of their training.

They were all exceptionally well behaved and did an outstanding job throughout their visit. We wish them every success as they continue their journey to becoming future guide dogs. 🐾

Update 🚒

Another steady week with several call-outs for the crew.
Last Tuesday, we were mobilised in the early hours to a water rescue incident on the River Trent in Newark, but were stood down before arrival.

On Friday, while conducting community water safety engagement alongside a crew from Newark, we were first mobilised to an RTC at North Scarle alongside Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service. We were subsequently stood down while en route. A short time later, the crew were mobilised again to a machinery fire at a recycling company on Jessop’s Way, Newark. The fire was extinguished using two breathing apparatus wearers and a hose reel jet.

On Saturday, a crew was required to assist Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service once again at Stapleford Woods, where firefighters dealt with a fire in the open.
Sunday saw two call-outs: first to provide standby cover at Newark Fire Station, and later to an RTC on the A1 alongside a Newark crew.
This week, we were also mobilised to Dobson's Quay following an alarm activation and provided standby cover at Newark again on Wednesday.

Although the weather has cooled slightly compared with last week, it remains important to spread awareness about the dangers of swimming in open water. While rivers, lakes, and other open-water locations may look inviting during warm weather, cold water shock and hidden hazards beneath the surface can pose serious risks.
If you see someone in difficulty in the water, call 999 immediately and, where safe to do so, use any lifesaving equipment available nearby.

🚒 Incident and Training Updates 🚒

Since our last update, crews have dealt with a number of incidents over the past couple of weeks.

Crews attended an RTC (road traffic collision) in Besthorpe where a vehicle had left the road and entered a garden. A crew from Collingham, alongside Newark Wholetime crews and the SRU from Newark, successfully extricated one casualty from the vehicle using Holmatro cutting gear and other specialist equipment.

Last week, crews were mobilised to an industrial warehouse in Newark after a cardboard compactor caught alight. Alongside Newark Wholetime and Newark On-Call crews, the fire 🔥 was quickly extinguished.

The following morning, crews attended a vehicle fire 🔥 on the A46 at Brough. The fire was extinguished using a hose reel jet from Newark’s Wholetime pump.

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, a crew was mobilised to a water rescue incident in Newark but was stood down before leaving the station.

This is a good opportunity to remind everyone that swimming in open water such as lakes and rivers can be extremely dangerous, especially during hot weather. While the water may look inviting, it is often significantly colder than expected and may contain hidden hazards beneath the surface that are not visible.

Training and drills have continued, including a large exercise at Rainworth involving two other On-Call appliances from Worksop and Blidworth. The scenario involved a leaking substance from a container within a barn, with multiple casualties requiring rescue. Crews operated in breathing apparatus (BA) and gas-tight suits. Thankfully, incidents like this are rare, but keeping procedures and training up to date is essential should a chemical incident occur.

Wednesday evening drills have also continued, covering topics such as:
• Safe working at height
• High-rise building presentations
• TDE focusing on Southwell Minster and how an incident there would be managed.

🚒 Drill Night & Updates

Incidents this past week have included an automatic fire alarm in Newark, which fortunately turned out to be a false alarm. On Saturday evening, we were mobilised as relief crews to a fire in Selston, and today we provided standby cover in Newark.

This evening’s drill took us to the Service Development Centre for a BA (Breathing Apparatus) training session. Here, crews are able to practise search techniques in a fully synthetic smoke-filled environment.

BA teams were tasked with entering the fire house and carrying out search operations to locate numerous “casualties” positioned on both the ground and first floors, under the watchful eyes of an SDC instructor and JO. Access to the first floor was gained using the 9m ladder.

Crews also developed their skills using the ECB (Entry Control Board) — a board and tally system which enables the ECO (Entry Control Officer) to monitor and ensure the safety of BA crews whilst operating inside the building.

A very successful and valuable training evening for all involved.

🚒 Drill Night – 06/05/2026 🚒

A busy and productive drill night this evening, with a visit from our Station Manager.

Composite drills were the focus, including use of the 13.5m ladder, pumping operations with both the main appliance pump and the light portable pump (LPP), and establishing water supplies from a hydrant and an open water source.

Crews then put this into action, supplying hose reels, jets, and a ground monitor.

A good evening building confidence and capability for our newer members, while giving our experienced firefighters valuable hands-on practice.

🚒 Community Events & Updates

It’s been a quieter week on the incident front, with just a couple of standby duties covering our wholetime colleagues at both Retford and Newark fire stations.

The highlight of the Bank Holiday weekend was attending the village May Fair 🎉 A fantastic community event with plenty of attractions—and a great chance for us to meet local residents, show people around the appliance, and share some important fire safety advice.

It’s been a steady weekend for the crew.

On Saturday, a team was mobilised to Newark to provide cover for our wholetime colleagues while they attended another incident.

Then on Sunday afternoon, we were called out as a relief crew to support the ongoing incident at Sutton Bonington, Returning late evening.
