We Love Carers

So there I was, standing on stage, thinking the Carers Awards evening had gone really well, all the awards had been handed out, and everything was wrapping up nicely.

Then Richard walked onto the stage from the Kingswinford and Stourbridge Lions…

I’ve known this amazing group of people for 18 years now, ever since they knocked on my door and offered to buy my son Tom, his first wheelchair. Since then, I’ve been lucky enough to see up close just how much incredible work they do, raising money for some truly brilliant causes.

So I’ll be honest — I was a bit surprised to see him up there when I thought the night was ending. But I was completely taken aback when he told everyone that I was receiving their most prestigious award — the Melvin Jones Fellowship for humanitarian service.
I honestly didn’t know what to say. I was overwhelmed that the Lions would even think I deserved something like that.

But the truth is, this isn’t about me. This charity is what it is because of the volunteers — many of whom are unpaid carers themselves. Week in, week out, they show up for people. They help others get the support they’re entitled to, they listen, they laugh, they offer a shoulder when it’s needed, and if they don’t have the answers, they go and find them. Most importantly, they make sure no one ever feels alone.

So while I’m incredibly honoured and grateful to the Lions for this award, I see it as something that belongs to all of us — every volunteer, past and present, who’ve helped make this charity what it is today.

Thank you, Kingswinford & Stourbridge Lions CIO, for making me feel so humbled — and for everything you do for the community through your fundraising and support.

On a wet and windy start to Carers Week, join us indoors at the Mary Stevens Centre, where we have up to 14 stallholders highlighting what Dudley has to offer for unpaid carers.

As Volunteers’ Week comes to a close, I want to take a moment to say a heartfelt thank you to every single person who has supported our charity.
We could not do what we do without the goodwill of our volunteers. Giving up your time—often quietly and without recognition—to support others, run our groups, fundraise, or even provide a friendly face and a cup of tea, is truly remarkable. It’s what makes this charity so special.
Over the past 17 years, we’ve been incredibly fortunate to have so many wonderful volunteers. I’ve genuinely lost count of how many have been part of our journey, but each one has left a lasting and unique imprint. Your skills, kindness, and dedication have changed lives, and that impact cannot be overstated.
To have been honoured with The King’s Award for Voluntary Service speaks volumes about the difference you all make—it really does say it all.

We’ve got a full week of exciting events planned to celebrate and support our incredible unpaid carers and dedicated professionals.

📅 What’s happening:

Monday: Kick things off at our Marketplace Event, with a range of providers ready to share information about the services available to support you.
Throughout the week: We’ll be out and about in the community alongside our amazing volunteers.
🏆 Awards Event: Celebrating the fantastic contribution of carers and professionals.
🎉 Saturday Fun Day: A great day out for everyone, featuring up to 40 stalls, plus a variety of cars and bikes on display!
