Today, on World Refugee Day πŸŒπŸ•ŠοΈ, we mark the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention. The Netherlands remains committed to protecting those in need of international protection, while promoting an orderly, fair and sustainable migration system. Effective protection, clear procedures and well-managed migration go hand in hand.

Yesterday, Ambassador Barbara van Hellemond met with Secretary General Nadia Papakosta of the Greek Ministry of Migration and Asylum 🀝 to discuss our ongoing cooperation. The Netherlands and Greece πŸ‡³πŸ‡±πŸ‡¬πŸ‡· will continue to work on practical solutions across the migration chain, including support for unaccompanied minors, better integration opportunities for recognised refugees, and fostering returns, including through innovative solutions.

The end of a journey shaped by Max van der Stoel’s legacy ✨

This week, Konstantinos met with the Ambassador to reflect on his study trip to the Netherlands. While the Embassy followed his journey through his beautiful vlogs, it was valuable to dive deeper into the many remarkable meetings he experienced. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡·πŸ‡³πŸ‡±

As Konstantinos shared:

β€œWhat began as an essay on Max van der Stoel’s legacy became a journey through the many values he championed: human rights, democracy, dialogue and international cooperation.

From volunteering in Amsterdam and visiting Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder to discussions at the OSCE and meetings with diplomats and civil society representatives, each encounter offered a different perspective on these ideals in practice.

Yet what stayed with me most was the warmth and openness of the people I met. Despite being far from home, I often felt surprisingly close to it. πŸ§‘πŸ’™

A reminder that some values transcend geography, and that the strongest bridges between countries are ultimately built by people.” πŸŒπŸ™ŒπŸ»

Diplomats from 27 missions support Athens Pride 2026! πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆπŸ³οΈβ€βš§οΈ

Embassies and representatives of 27 diplomatic missions are proud to stand in solidarity with LGBTQI+ communities in Greece. We are honoured to participate in Athens Pride 2026 and to support this meaningful celebration of equality, inclusion, and human rights.

At a time when the value of inclusion is ever more apparent, and most needed, we reaffirm our shared commitment to societies where all people can live openly, safely, and with dignity. While recognising the progress that has been made in advancing equality, we also acknowledge that sustained effort is still required to ensure the full and equal participation of all individuals.

We reaffirm that le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender, q***r, and intersex persons are entitled to the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms. In this spirit, we support equality before the law and freedom from discrimination in all areas of life, including social, economic, cultural, and public life.

As we join this year’s Athens Pride events and celebrations under the theme β€˜It’s About You (ΣΡ Αφορά)’, we highlight the importance of creating inclusive environments where diversity is respected, valued and protected, and where all individuals can live openly, safely, and with dignity. We invite others to stand with us in this shared commitment and to contribute to the continued building of more open, inclusive, and equitable societies.β€οΈπŸ§‘πŸ’›πŸ’šπŸ’™πŸ’œ

Last week we had the honor to host the Ombudsman Academy at the Residence of the Netherlands Ambassador in Greece. This is an initiative co-organized by the Dutch and the Greek Ombudsman. Both institutions have collaborated closely over the years, exchanging knowledge and expertise. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡·πŸ‡³πŸ‡±

Participants of institutions from 15 different countries gathered to share insights on improving their effectiveness and outreach, with this year’s central theme being: giving voice to the voiceless πŸ“£

The two-day academy concluded on Friday with a roundtable discussion, where several ambassadors joined to learn more about the challenges the Ombudsmen face and to discuss crossborder cooperation.

Thursday focused on democracy, human rights, and political engagement. πŸ“£πŸŒŽ

In the morning, Konstantinos visited the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities in The Hague. The OSCE also presents the Max van der Stoel Award every two years, making it extra meaningful to reflect on his legacy.

He then visited the National Ombudsman, gaining insight into their vital role in safeguarding citizens’ rights.

The day ended with a special visit to the Greek Embassy in The Hague, where he met with the Ambassador H.E. Caterina Ghini! πŸ‡¬πŸ‡·πŸ‡³πŸ‡±

Konstantinos started his 3rd day at the COC head office in Amsterdam. As the world’s longest-standing LGBTI+ advocacy organization, celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, COC continues to advocate for equal rights for all. πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

Later, he visited the remarkable Museum Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder, a hidden church within a 17th-century canal house. A powerful setting to reflect on freedom of religion.

Konstantinos ended the day by volunteering with Serve the City International, an organization that connects volunteers with initiatives in need. He helped Taste Before You Waste prepare dinner for their community center, supporting a more connected and sustainable Amsterdam! 🌱🌎
