The recently finalised trifecta of agreements between Australia and the EU opens exciting new opportunities for stronger trade and investment ties between Australia and Greece. These opportunities were the focus of a presentation delivered by Ambassador Duncan for a distinguished audience of Greek CEOs.

Jointly organised with the Association of Greek CEOs (ACEO), the event brought together leaders from some of Greece’s most dynamic businesses, spanning sectors from pharmaceuticals and construction to energy and technology.

In her remarks and the lively Q&A that followed, Ambassador Duncan discussed the opportunities offered by the Australia-EU Free Trade Agreement, the Security and Defence Partnership, and Australia’s association with Horizon Europe. She highlighted what makes Australia a great place to do business, including our AAA credit rating, highly educated labour force, transparent legal framework and ease of doing business, as well as our preferential access to the 5 billion consumers in the Indo Pacific region. As a top 5 country in global asset management with funds totalling around $5 trillion, Ambassador Duncan underlined the opportunities for investment attraction. The importance of trade diversification was also discussed, as geostrategic competition, supply chain risks, and the coercive use of trade and investment measures complicate the global economic environment.

Our sincere thanks to Mr Vassilis Rabat and ACEO members for the excellent collaboration and a useful discussion.

What a truly memorable and touching occasion!
Having forged a brilliant academic path in Australia, Deakin Distinguished Professor Kon Mouzakis has been conferred an Honorary Professorship by the University of West Attica – the most prestigious distinction that a university can bestow.
During a moving ceremony, hosted by Ambassador Duncan at the Embassy, the Rector of the University of West Attica, Professor Panagiotis E. Kaldis; the Dean of the School of Engineering, Professor Konstantinos Stergiou; and the Head of the Department of Industrial Design and Production and Associate Dean of the School of Engineering, Professor Georgios Priniotakis attested to Professor Mouzakis’ outstanding achievements and contributions to science.
The son of Greek migrants to Australia, Kon Mouzakis arrived in Australia at 2 years of age. He went on to build a stellar academic career in science and technology. As Professor of Software and Technology Innovation and Co-Director of the Applied Artificial Intelligence Initiative (A2I2) at Deakin University, his research has been at the forefront of human-centered computing, data science, and machine learning. Among his pioneering contributions is a world-first Trauma Reception and Resuscitation Decision Support tool, implemented at the Alfred Hospital’s Trauma Center in Melbourne.
While excelling in Australia, Professor Mouzakis has also remained deeply connected to his Greek heritage, actively fostering ties with his ancestral homeland. These connections are now further strengthened through his new role at the University of West Attica.
Surrounded by distinguished academics and his beloved family and friends from Greece, Prof Mouzakis was invested with the academic gown of the University of West Attica amid warm applause.
We hope his new position will open exciting avenues for scientific collaboration and look forward to the strengthening of the academic and research ties between Australia and Greece.

Ambassador Duncan was very pleased to visit Elval – one of the leading European integrated aluminium rolling facilities – to check out their operations and discuss their partnership with Australian shipbuilder, Austal.

Austal is leading the decarbonisation of passenger ferries, using Elval low-carbon aluminium to build the world’s first high speed catamaran with a cycle propulsion system that includes both gas and steam turbines and which will be fully hydrogen-ready.

The vessel is destined for Sweden, where it will carry people and goods between Gotland and the mainland with Gotlandsbolaget.

With the recent finalisation of the Australia-EU Free Trade Agreement, we look forward to seeing more fantastic partnerships like this one.

Ambassador Duncan was back in Bulgaria this week, meeting the new government and discussing how our two countries can make the most of the new Australia and EU partnerships in trade, security and research. Ambassador Duncan also caught up with our excellent Honorary Consul, Joana Kehlibarova, and the Bulgarian Australian Business Council – and even did a bit of early scouting for our Eurovision launch party next year!

One of the highlights was meeting a couple of Aussie champions in Sofia. Fresh off incredible performances at the Down Syndrome World Championship, gymnast Chris Bunton and shot put/discus thrower Andre Rivett joined the Ambassador and Honorary Consul Kehlibarova for a celebratory beer with their coaches and families.
Andre is taking home a silver medal and a fourth place, while Chris won gold, two silvers and a bronze – an amazing outcome all round. A privilege for the Ambassador to spend time with these brilliant athletes!

This lasting commitment brings Australia’s overall support for Ukraine to over $1.8 billion, including more than $1.6 billion in military assistance since the start of the conflict.

Australia continues to participate in the Coalition of the Willing, a group of more than 35 countries strengthening support for Ukraine to see a just and lasting peace on its terms; and remains steadfast in its support for Ukraine as it defends itself against Russian aggression.

Diplomats from 27 missions support Athens Pride 2026

Embassies and representatives of 27 diplomatic missions are proud to stand in solidarity with LGBTQI+ communities in Greece. We are honoured to participate in Athens Pride 2026 and to support this meaningful celebration of equality, inclusion, and human rights.

At a time when the value of inclusion is ever more apparent, and most needed, we reaffirm our shared commitment to societies where all people can live openly, safely, and with dignity. While recognising the progress that has been made in advancing equality, we also acknowledge that sustained effort is still required to ensure the full and equal participation of all individuals.

We reaffirm that le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender, q***r, and intersex persons are entitled to the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms. In this spirit, we support equality before the law and freedom from discrimination in all areas of life, including social, economic, cultural, and public life.

As we join this year’s Athens Pride events and celebrations under the theme 'It’s About You (Σε Αφορά)’, we highlight the importance of creating inclusive environments where diversity is respected, valued and protected, and where all individuals can live openly, safely, and with dignity. We invite others to stand with us in this shared commitment and to contribute to the continued building of more open, inclusive, and equitable societies.

What a vibrant Australian community Thessaloniki is home to!
Ambassador Duncan was delighted to spend time with members of the community, rolling up her sleeves to serve delicious Aussie favourites – all in support of a truly wonderful charity, the Greek Children’s Village of Filiro.
During her visit, Ambassador Duncan also had the opportunity to tour the Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH), exploring their cutting-edge research and discussing exciting opportunities for collaboration between Greek and Australian institutions with the Chairman and Director General, Dr Evangelos Bekiaris, and his colleagues.
And of course, no visit to Thessaloniki would be complete without enjoying a local delicacy – the irresistible trigono!

Stay safe in Greece this summer folks! Quad bikes (ATVs) are designed for off-road terrain. Their high center of gravity, wide tyres, and lack of protective structure make them less stable and more accident-prone on roads. No matter how good a driver your are, think twice before renting a quad bike on your holiday in Greece.
