Did you catch Fong Chung-Ray’s piece in Chamber 4 of 𝘏𝘶𝘯𝘨 𝘏𝘴𝘪𝘦𝘯: 𝘉𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥𝘴 at Chantal Miller Gallery?

Even though the exhibition has just come to a close, the spirit of modern Chinese art lives on—through a new addition to our indoor art collection.

𝐅𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐡𝐮𝐧𝐠-𝐑𝐚𝐲, 2022-5-20 (2022)

A contemporary of Hung Hsien and fellow member of Taiwan‘s influential Fifth Moon Group, Fong Chung-Ray (b. 1933) is known for his distinctive ”textual abstraction“—a practice that bridges Western acrylics with the expressive traditions of Chinese ink.

In this work, he incorporates a passage from the Vimalakirti Sutra using a reverse-rubbing technique: calligraphic characters are first composed on plastic, then transferred onto canvas to create beautifully crackled textures. The composition blurs the lines between painting, collage, and calligraphy, bringing the experimental energy of the mid-20th century into the present.

Now on view near the Asia Society Store.

Hung Hsien: Between Worlds, the landmark exhibition showcasing the ink art of 92-year-old artist Hung Hsien, concluded yesterday, June 21. Since opening in March, the exhibition drew visitors from across generations, including students, artists, families, and general audiences, offering a rare glimpse into the life and practice of an artist who was part of the legendary Fifth Moon Group, taught in Hong Kong, and later continued her artistic journey in Texas.

The exhibition was made all the more special by Hung Hsien’s presence at the opening, as she traveled to Hong Kong for the occasion. During the “Art for Breakfast” session, she delighted attendees by sharing personal experiences and reuniting with former colleagues, students, and longtime well-wishers.

Highlights over the past three months included a live ink art demonstration by Professor Zhou Jin from CUHK at the Asia Society Hong Kong booth during Art Basel, which captivated fairgoers and brought Hung Hsien’s techniques to life for new audiences.

Hung Hsien: Between Worlds was a collaborative presentation between Asia Society Hong Kong and Asia Society Texas, guest curated by Dr. Tiffany Wai-ying Beres, with Dr. Owen Duffy playing a key role in bringing the show to Hong Kong. We extend our deepest gratitude to both curators, and to all who visited, supported, and contributed to the exhibition’s success.

The exhibition may have ended, but the journey continues. The full-colour exhibition catalogue—featuring Hung Hsien’s techniques, creative thinking, and a comprehensive selection of works—remains available for purchase at the Asia Society Store.

Coming Soon: Our next exhibition, Singing and Dancing with Brush and Ink: The Art of Wesley Tongson, opens in July. We look forward to welcoming you back.

Stay tuned for more details!

𝐒𝐢𝐫 𝐆𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐨𝐧 𝐖𝐮 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐬𝐢𝐚 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐊𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐆𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝

An evening of tribute and celebration unfolded as 𝐒𝐢𝐫 𝐆𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐨𝐧 𝐖𝐮 received the Asia Society Hong Kong Game Changer Award from The Honorable 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝐊𝐂 𝐋𝐞𝐞, The Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, at the Hopewell Hotel last evening. The award ceremony was followed by a lively and insightful fireside chat between Sir Gordon and 𝐑𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐞 𝐂. 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧, Chairman of Asia Society Hong Kong.

Ms. 𝐒. 𝐀𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐠, President of Asia Society Hong Kong, remarked that it was a true honor to present the Asia Society Hong Kong Game Changer Award to Sir Gordon.

Sir Gordon was one of the first Hong Kong real estate developers to invest in mainland China. Known as the "King of Highways," he built the mainland's first toll road and later developed a 380-kilometer network across the border.

To recognize his transformative contributions to the mainland through landmark infrastructure projects, Asia Society Hong Kong presented him with the Asia Society Hong Kong Game Changer Award last evening.

Having built bridges, roads, tunnels, and other infrastructure that connect people, cities, regions, and countries, Sir Gordon truly embodies the spirit of connecting communities and building bridges, a core pillar of Asia Society's mission.

In this short clip from our discussion on How Africa Works: Success and Failure on the World’s Last Developmental Frontier, author 𝗝𝗼𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 reflects on why Africa today reminds him of China in the early 1990s.

Rather than expecting an overnight transformation, Studwell points to the slow and steady gains already emerging across the continent, including IMF forecasts that highlight Africa’s growing presence among the world’s fastest-growing economies.

在這段《How Africa Works: Success and Failure on the World’s Last Developmental Frontier》討論精華片段中,作者 𝗝𝗼𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 分享了他對非洲經濟發展的觀察,並談到今天的非洲如何令他想起 90 年代初的中國。

Join us at the 𝐀𝐬𝐢𝐚 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐊𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐆𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝, honoring 𝐒𝐢𝐫 𝐆𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐨𝐧 𝐖𝐮, Founder and Chairman of Hopewell Holdings.

Sir Gordon was among the first entrepreneurs to recognize the potential of the Mainland, pioneering roads, power plants, and highways that helped fuel the rise of the Pearl River Delta into the economic powerhouse it is today.

Beyond his business achievements, he is deeply respected for his contributions to education and philanthropy, supporting institutions on both sides of the border and across Asia. He has also dedicated decades of effort to the development of Wan Chai, where his 40-year master plan, now known as the Hopewell Cluster, has transformed Queen's Road East into a thriving commercial and hospitality destination.

On June 18, Sir Gordon will hold a fireside chat with 𝐀𝐒𝐇𝐊 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐑𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐞 𝐂. 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧.

𝐇𝐊𝐒𝐀𝐑 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐟 𝐄𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝐋𝐞𝐞 will also join to mark this occasion alongside Hong Kong's leading business and civic figures.
