🌾 What if one of ASEAN’s most overlooked agricultural by-products holds the key to powering its clean energy future?

Across the region, millions of tonnes of rice husks are burned or left to rot each year, contributing to emissions and air pollution. But rich in carbon and silica, these husks can be transformed into biochar electrodes for supercapacitors, offering a low-cost, locally sourced alternative to imported lithium-ion batteries for energy storage.

Explore how this circular innovation can support rural microgrids, electric vehicles, and solar energy storage, while creating new income streams for farmers and driving progress towards SDGs 7, 12, and 13.

⚖️ Ensuring no one is left behind in the energy transition

Through the ARNECC Paper Talk on Just and Inclusive Energy Transition (JIET), experts explored the challenges of building a fair labour transition in a rapidly changing global landscape.

Key issues such as skills mismatch, limited job mobility, the exclusion of informal workers, and financing gaps continue to shape the transition. The discussion also highlighted that policies must be tailored to each country’s context, rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all approach.

A just transition requires intentional inclusion, strong coordination, and meaningful participation from workers and communities.

🚦Consider a world where smarter traffic systems simultaneously resolve gridlock and climate challenges in ASEAN cities.

In major urban centres like Jakarta, severe congestion costs the economy billions annually and pushes air pollution to dangerous levels. The proposed ‘National Smart Mobility Platform’ uses AI, IoT sensors, and big data to predict traffic patterns, reduce vehicle idling, and keep the city moving smoothly.

Explore how this innovative digital infrastructure can cut carbon emissions, boost economic productivity, and drive progress towards SDGs 7, 12, and 13.

💡 Advancing inclusivity in ASEAN’s energy transition

At TransTech ASEAN 2026, the “Women in Energy” session highlighted a key reality—women represent only 24% of the region’s energy workforce, with even fewer in leadership and technical roles.

The discussion emphasised that achieving a successful energy transition requires more than participation. It requires empowering women to lead, shaping inclusive policies, and strengthening support systems across institutions and industries.

As ASEAN moves towards a sustainable future, inclusivity is not just important—it is essential.
