ABSTRACT:
This essay explores the position of Bangladesh and its external relations during the Cold War, and how it was shaped by the history of Pakistan and other neighboring nations. Tracing the trajectory of the Bengali Language Movement and Operation Searchlight, this chapter examines the nation-building process in the aftermath of a violent partition and the forces leading to military dictatorship. It provides an account of the dynamic changes in Bangladeshโs foreign relations with China, India, the Islamic countries, and the United States and how international aid has been crucial to its economic development and policy reform. Furthermore, by examining the role of international aid, the chapter evaluates the principles of non-alignment, peaceful coexistence, and opposition to colonialism, racialism, and imperialism enshrined in Bangladeshโs foreign policy.
