When Cinema Refuses to Reduce a Story to a Label.
South Asia's leading LGBTQIA+ film platforms have long made space for stories that challenge prejudice — and this year's KASHISH Pride Film Festival, held June 3–7 in its 17th edition, deepened that conversation further, bringing together over 150 films from 40+ countries.
For PVB Studio, this terrain has never felt unfamiliar. From Porojibi and Prantik to Preet Na Mane R**t, Atmojo, and the RESH anthology, PVB's young filmmakers grew up treating LGBTQIA+ realities as simply human stories — not novelties, not provocations.
That made the response to RESH in 2021 all the more telling. Instead of being read as nuanced human narratives, the films were repeatedly flattened in parts of the media into "same-sex films" — reductive, sensational, and in some cases excluded from festivals altogether. For the young directors, the reaction was baffling, especially in a post-decriminalisation India.
The larger truth remains — cinema can humanise where headlines often refuse to. One film at Prayasam's 13th B*W Food Film Festival continues exactly that legacy: a love story that is same-sex in subject, but universal in feeling.

The “good daughter” trope is changing in India, and the old rulebook no longer applies:

In light of PVB Studio’s 2018 film Abhisaar, the idea of the “good daughter” can be seen in a new, more layered way. The film reflects a changing reality in which daughters are no longer defined only by obedience or sacrifice, but by their ability to balance love, responsibility, and selfhood. Through Avilasha Ganguly’s character, Abhisaar presents a young woman who does not simply conform to family expectations, yet remains deeply rooted in care and accountability toward both her natal and marital families. She challenges the old image of the ideal daughter as someone who must remain quiet, compliant, and self-effacing, and instead shows that dignity, independence, and devotion can exist together.
What makes this shift especially significant is that today’s daughters are not necessarily rejecting family values; they are redefining them. They are asking to be heard, to make choices about their lives, and to participate in decisions that shape their futures. In Abhisaar, this is beautifully expressed through a character who is neither rebelliously simplistic nor submissively traditional. She represents a more mature understanding of womanhood — one where a daughter can be thoughtful, assertive, and ambitious without losing her sense of duty or emotional connection.
The film thus speaks to a larger social change in India. The “good daughter” is no longer only the one who adjusts silently. She is increasingly the one who communicates honestly, stands by her choices, and carries family affection without surrendering her individuality. Abhisaar captures this transition with sensitivity, making it a relevant reflection of contemporary daughterhood in India.

Today, inside Kalanjali — Prayasam's art gazebo, where creativity has always felt at home, Saptarshi, lead Adobe Educator, took Brainware University's Media Science and Journalism students on a journey from blank page to storyboard.
The energy in the room was immediate. By the end of the session, the students had developed two sharp, original story plots — one following a community radio host exposing suppressed flood warnings, another tracking a multimedia journalist fighting a deepfake smear campaign. Both plots were built with real journalistic rigour — character stakes, verification methods, ethical decision-making, and visual pacing all thoughtfully factored in.
What made this session significant was not just the creativity it unlocked, but the bridge it built — between reporting craft and production thinking. Between knowing the story and knowing how to tell it.
Something is fitting about this work happening inside Kalanjali. A space built for artistic expression becomes the classroom where the next generation of journalists learns that storytelling and truth-telling are, at their best, the same thing.
Because in today's media landscape, a journalist who can verify, narrate, and visualise is not just a reporter. They are a counter to misinformation. A builder of community trust. A storyteller with a conscience.
That is exactly what Prayasam and Brainware are training together.
