PAU Develops Innovative Seed Delivery System for Kitchen Gardening

To promote kitchen gardening and make vegetable cultivation easier for urban households, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has developed an innovative seed delivery system for small-seeded vegetable crops such as brinjal, tomato and cauliflower.

Sharing the details, Dr Ajmer Singh Dhatt, Director of Research, said that the technology has been designed especially for urban households, apartment dwellers and gardening enthusiasts who often find it difficult to handle and sow tiny vegetable seeds. The new system simplifies sowing, ensures easy handling of costly seeds and significantly reduces seed wastage.

Dr Amandeep Singh Brar, Director (Seeds), informed that under the new technology, a small quantity of seeds is packed in specially designed sowing packets. These packets can be placed directly into pots or grow bags and covered with 1-2 cm of soil, eliminating the need to open the packet or handle individual seeds. Each packet can produce approximately three to four healthy seedlings, which may either be retained in the same container or transplanted after establishment, depending on the available space.

According to PAU scientists Dr Navjyot Kaur and Dr Anju Bala, the innovation will encourage households to grow their own fresh, nutritious and pesticide-free vegetables while making efficient use of limited spaces such as balconies, rooftops and courtyards. Besides meeting household vegetable requirements, it is expected to popularize kitchen gardening among urban residents. The University also plans to introduce similar seed packets for a range of vegetable and ornamental crops.

The Vice-Chancellor, Dr Satbir Singh Gosal, expressed confidence that this farmer- and consumer-friendly innovation would encourage more families to adopt kitchen gardening, enabling them to enjoy safe, fresh and home-grown vegetables while contributing to healthier lifestyles and sustainable urban living.

ਸ਼ਹਿਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਘਰੇਲੂ ਬਗੀਚੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਧਦੀ ਦਿਲਚਸਪੀ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਪੀ ਏ ਯੂ ਨੇ ਬੈਂਗਣ, ਟਮਾਟਰ ਅਤੇ ਫੁੱਲ ਗੋਭੀ ਵਰਗੀਆਂ ਛੋਟੀਆਂ ਬੀਜ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਸਬਜ਼ੀਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਫਸਲਾਂ ਲਈ ਨਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਲੋਕ ਪੱਖੀ ਬੀਜ ਡਿਲੀਵਰੀ ਸਿਸਟਮ ਵਿਕਸਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।

ਪੀ ਏ ਯੂ ਦੇ ਵਾਈਸ-ਚਾਂਸਲਰ ਡਾ ਸਤਿਬੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਗੋਸਲ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਤਕਨੀਕ ਨੂੰ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹਿਤ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਉਮੀਦ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਾਈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਵਿਧੀ ਕਿਸਾਨ ਅਤੇ ਘਰੇਲੂ ਉਤਪਾਦਕ ਪੱਖੀ ਹੋਣ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਲ ਸ਼ਹਿਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਕਸਬਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਘਰੇਲੂ ਬਗੀਚੀ ਨੂੰ ਵਧਾਵਾ ਦੇਣ ਵਿਚ ਸਹਾਈ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਬਾਲਕੋਨੀ, ਛੱਤਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਹੜਿਆਂ ਵਰਗੀਆਂ ਸੀਮਤ ਥਾਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਢੁਕਵੀਂ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਤਾਜ਼ੀਆਂ, ਸੁਰੱਖਿਅਤ ਅਤੇ ਘਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਗਾਈਆਂ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਸਬਜ਼ੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਲੈਣ ਦੇ ਯੋਗ ਹੋ ਸਕਣਗੇ।

ਇਸ ਸੰਬੰਧੀ ਵੇਰਵੇ ਸਾਂਝੇ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਨਿਰਦੇਸ਼ਕ ਖੋਜ ਡਾ. ਅਜਮੇਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਢੱਟ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਹੋਂਦ ਵਿਚ ਆਈ ਇਸ ਨਵੀਂ ਤਕਨਾਲੋਜੀ ਦਾ ਉਦੇਸ਼ ਸ਼ਹਿਰੀ ਘਰਾਂ, ਅਪਾਰਟਮੈਂਟਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਗਬਾਨੀ ਦੇ ਸ਼ੁਕੀਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਘਰੇਲੂ ਬਗੀਚੀ ਨੂੰ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹਿਤ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ। ਖ਼ਾਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਅਕਸਰ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਬਜ਼ੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਬੀਜ ਸੰਭਾਲਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਾਹਮਣਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਤਕਨਾਲੋਜੀ ਸਬਜ਼ੀਆਂ ਬੀਜਣ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਜ ਨੂੰ ਸਰਲ ਬਣਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਮਹਿੰਗੇ ਬੀਜਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੌਖੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਸਹਾਈ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਬੀਜਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਰਬਾਦੀ ਨੂੰ ਘੱਟ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।

ਨਿਰਦੇਸ਼ਕ ਬੀਜ ਡਾ. ਅਮਨਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਰਾੜ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਨਵੇਂ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਤਹਿਤ ਬੀਜਾਂ ਦੀ ਥੋੜ੍ਹੀ ਮਾਤਰਾ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਤਿਆਰ ਕੀਤੇ ਬਿਜਾਈ ਪੈਕੇਟਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੈਕ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਇਹਨਾਂ ਪੈਕੇਟਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਧੇ ਬਿਜਾਈ ਲਈ ਗਮਲਿਆਂ ਜਾਂ ਗ੍ਰੋਥ ਬੈਗਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ 1-2 ਸੈਂਟੀਮੀਟਰ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਨਾਲ ਢਕਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਢੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਬੀਜ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਖੋਲ੍ਹਣ ਜਾਂ ਸੰਭਾਲਣ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ। ਹਰੇਕ ਪੈਕੇਟ ਲਗਭਗ ਤਿੰਨ ਤੋਂ ਚਾਰ ਪੌਦੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਸਮਰੱਥ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਜਗ੍ਹਾ ਦੇ ਆਧਾਰ 'ਤੇ, ਬੂਟਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਇੱਕੋ ਗਮਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਗਮਲਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਧਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਸਥਾਪਿਤ ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਦੂਜੇ ਗਮਲਿਆਂ/ਗਮਲਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਦਲਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਪੀ ਏ ਯੂ ਦੇ ਵਿਗਿਆਨੀਆਂ ਡਾ. ਨਵਜਯੋਤ ਕੌਰ ਅਤੇ ਡਾ. ਅੰਜੂ ਬਾਲਾ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਇਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਤਾਜ਼ੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਪੌਸ਼ਟਿਕ ਸਬਜ਼ੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਸਵੈ-ਉਤਪਾਦਨ ਨੂੰ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਮਿਲੇਗਾ ਅਤੇ ਸਬਜ਼ੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਘਰੇਲੂ ਜ਼ਰੂਰਤ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰੀ ਹੋ ਸਕੇਗੀ। ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਘਰੇਲੂ ਬਗੀਚੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੀਟਨਾਸ਼ਕ ਮੁਕਤ ਸਬਜ਼ੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਉਤਪਾਦਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਮਿਲੇਗੀ। ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਘਰੇਲੂ ਬਗੀਚੀ ਦੀ ਸਹੂਲਤ ਲਈ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਸਬਜ਼ੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਸਜਾਵਟੀ ਫਸਲਾਂ ਲਈ ਇਹ ਬੀਜ ਪੈਕੇਟ ਉਪਲਬਧ ਕਰਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਯੋਜਨਾ ਬਣਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।

PAU and NCC Join Hands to Strengthen Youth Development, Innovation and Leadership Training

In a significant step towards empowering youth through discipline, innovation and nation-building, Brigadier PS Cheema, SM, VSM, Group Commander, NCC Group Headquarters Ludhiana, met with Dr Satbir Singh Gosal, Vice-Chancellor, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), to strengthen collaboration between PAU and National Cadet Corps (NCC).The discussion centered on expanding NCC initiatives at PAU to foster youth empowerment, discipline, and nation-building. By aligning NCC activities with PAU’s academic vision, the partnership aims to develop future-ready graduates equipped with leadership, social responsibility, and professional excellence.

Dr Gosal reaffirmed PAU's commitment to holistic student development. He emphasized that the university will continue to back initiatives combining academic excellence with character building and national service. Dr Gosal further expressed confidence that the enhanced PAU-NCC partnership will empower students to become skilled, responsible, and socially conscious future leaders. He further asserted that the collaboration aims at integration of agricultural research, rural development and community outreach activities with NCC programmes, enabling cadets to contribute towards sustainable development and nation-building.

Brig. Cheema emphasized that NCC training instills teamwork, leadership, decision-making, and organizational skills. He highlighted the objectives of NCC in fostering leadership, discipline, environmental stewardship, social service and community engagement, the initiatives being closely aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Brig. Cheema stressed that NCC trainings build a strong foundation for careers in the Armed Forces, civil services, corporate sectors, and research institutions. He also commended PAU's ongoing support for NCC activities and youth development initiatives.

Dr Kamaljeet Singh Suri, Director Students' Welfare, highlighted that the university is actively expanding its on-campus support framework to seamlessly integrate NCC training with regular student activities. He assured that the DSW office will provide full logistical and venue support to ensure all training camps and leadership programs on campus.

It was agreed upon during the meeting, to revive the historic firing range at PAU and develop a modern obstacle training facility to enhance physical fitness, confidence and adventure training among cadets. NCC cadets will be encouraged to participate in national innovation competitions, hackathons and technology-driven initiatives.

Col. Faizan Zahoor, Commanding Officer, 19 Punjab Battalion NCC, and Dr Gurlal Singh Pannu, CTO, NCC, PAU, were also present at the meeting.

One week FDP on ‘AI and Open-Source Tools’ Begins AT PAU

A five-day Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on “AI and Open-Source Tools for Teaching and Learning Excellence” commenced today at the School of Digital Innovations for Smart Agriculture (S-DISA), College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology (COAE&T), Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), in collaboration with the National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research (NITTTR), Chandigarh. This is the first such initiative undertaken by S-DISA to promote the effective use of Artificial Intelligence and open-source technologies in higher education and research. A total of 42 participants have registered for the programme. The participants include faculty members from various disciplines of PAU, Ludhiana, besides Ph.D. scholars, postdoctoral fellows and young postgraduate students, all eager to enhance their knowledge and skills in Artificial Intelligence.
The inaugural function was graced by Dr Manjeet Singh, Dean, College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology, and Director, S-DISA, PAU, as the chief guest. Dr Mahesh Kumar, Additional Director Research (Engineering), PAU was the Guest of Honour, while Dr OP Gupta, Head, Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, was also present on the occasion.

Addressing the participants, Dr Manjeet Singh emphasized the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence in education and research, and acquainted the participants with several emerging AI tools useful for scientific writing, data analysis, content generation and teaching. Dr Singh also shared that such type of programmes will be organised by S-DISA. Teaching programmes have already been started under S-DISA and research programmes are being chalked out related with use of these advanced tools in the area of agriculture, he added.

Dr Mahesh Kumar stressed that the adoption of AI tools has become the need of the hour for advancing engineering technologies and promoting innovation.

Welcoming the participants, Dr MS Sidhu, Scientist (Nanotechnology) and Faculty, S-DISA, who is serving as the Course Coordinator from PAU, highlighted the objectives of the programme and emphasized the growing importance of AI-enabled tools in teaching, research and knowledge dissemination.

Dr Maitreyee Dutta, Course Coordinator from NITTTR Chandigarh, introduced the course contents and elaborated on the applications of various AI and open-source tools for enhancing teaching-learning processes, research productivity and content development.

The programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks proposed by Dr VP Sethi, Head, Civil Engineering and Coordinator, S-DISA, who expressed gratitude to the dignitaries and appreciated the overwhelming response received from participants for this pioneering FDP.

Annual NSO Camp Concludes at PAU, VC Encourages Students to Embrace Sports

The Annual National Sports Organization (NSO) Camp of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), concluded on June 21, 2026 with great enthusiasm and participation. A total of 156 students representing 15 sports disciplines attended the camp.

The PAU Vice-Chancellor, Dr Satbir Singh Gosal, who graced the valedictory function as the chief guest, commended the students for their enthusiastic participation. In his address, Dr Gosal emphasized that regular athletic engagement fosters essential personal development traits like teamwork, leadership, discipline, and stress resilience. He motivated the students to adopt sports as a core lifestyle choice to achieve a healthy balance between academic and extracurricular pursuits.

Extending a warm welcome to dignitaries, Dr Kamaljeet Singh Suri, Director Students' Welfare, outlined the diverse activities and standout achievements of the NSO Camp, highlighting a highly competitive cross-country race organized for both boys and girls. In the boys’ category, Mohd. Rihan secured the first place, followed by Satnam Singh in second, and Tanish Jaggi in third place. In the girls’ division, Harman Kaur clinched the top spot, while Ramanpreet Kaur and Jessica Chaudhary finished second and third, respectively. Mohd. Rihan was adjudged as the ‘Best Camper’ in the boys’ category, while Harman Kaur was declared the ‘Best Camper’ among girls.

Dr Sukhbir Singh, Assistant Director (Physical Education), conducted the stage proceedings. Dr Paramvir Singh Grewal, Assistant Director (Physical Education) and Camp In-charge, proposed a vote of thanks. Dr Parmpal Singh Gill, Principal Fruit Scientist; Mr Ajay Sharma, Swimming Coach; Mr Gurteg Singh, Hockey Coach, and Mr Gurmeet Singh, Athletic Coach, were also present on the occasion.

PAU Organizes a Mega Anti-Drug March in its Campus

In a powerful demonstration of solidarity and social responsibility, the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) organized a massive anti-drug march across its campus. Arranged by the Directorate of Students’ Welfare, the rally was held under the aegis of the Government of India’s NCORD Mechanism and the Government of Punjab’s flagship ‘Yudh Nashean Virudh’ campaign. The event saw an overwhelming response, drawing a passionate crowd of over 200 students and staff members who marched shoulder-to-shoulder to raise awareness against the menace of substance abuse.

The rally was led by the Vice-Chancellor PAU, Dr Satbir Singh Gosal, alongside Director Students’ Welfare, Dr KS Suri, and senior officials of the PAU. Addressing the energized gathering, Dr Gosal emphasized that university life is the golden chapter of a student's journey—a time that must be fiercely guarded and dedicated to academic excellence, skill acquisition, and career building. ‘Drug abuse not only destroys an individual; it fractures families, drains societal resources, and ravages physical and mental health’. He stressed that the youth must stay focused on professional growth and societal progress, and never let addiction steal their bright futures.

Earlier, welcoming the chief guest and participants, Dr Suri spoke passionately on the importance of collective efforts in creating a drug-free society. He urged the students to adopt wholesome, active lifestyles, and to step up efforts not just as participants, but as ‘true ambassadors of the anti-drug movement’ in the PAU. The seamless ex*****on of the march was coordinated by Dr Paramvir Singh Grewal, Assistant Director (Physical Education).

PAU ORGANISES PM-KISAN UTSAV DIWAS; FARMERS LISTEN TO PM'S ADDRESS THROUGH LIVE TELECAST

Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, organised a programme to mark PM-Kisan Utsav Diwas in connection with the release of the 23rd instalment under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) Scheme. The event was held under the supervision of Dr Tarsem Singh Dhillon, Additional Director of Extension Education, PAU.

The programme commenced with a formal welcome address by Dr Prabhjodh Singh Sandhu, Additional Director of Extension Education. Dr Tarsem Singh Dhillon highlighted the significance of the PM-KISAN scheme and various initiatives aimed at strengthening the agricultural sector.

Experts from PAU delivered lectures on integrated pest, disease, nutrient and w**d management practices in kharif crops. Dr Amarjeet Singh, Principal Extension Scientist (Plant Pathology), Dr Simarjeet Kaur, Principal Agronomist, Dr R.S. Chandi, Principal Extension Scientist (Entomology) and Dr Harshneet Singh, Assistant Soil Chemist shared recommendations for enhancing crop productivity and sustainability. Dr Kulvir Kaur, Senior Extension Scientist (Home Science), also apprised participants about capacity-building and entrepreneurship opportunities for rural youth.

During the programme, farmers, extension personnel and other participants watched the live telecast of the national PM-Kisan Utsav Diwas event from West Bengal, where Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi released the 23rd instalment of financial assistance to eligible farmers under the PM-KISAN scheme and addressed the farming community.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr G.S. Makkar, Incharge, Plant Clinic.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF YOGA CELEBRATED AT PUNJAB AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY

The International Day of Yoga was celebrated with great enthusiasm at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana. More than 200 students participated in the event and performed various yoga asanas under the guidance of experts.
The Worthy Vice-Chancellor of PAU, Ludhiana, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Addressing the participants, he emphasized the importance of yoga in maintaining physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. He stated that yoga is a natural and effective way to keep the body fit as it is closely associated with physical exercise. Unlike medical systems such as Ayurveda and Allopathy, which primarily focus on treatment through medicines, yoga emphasizes prevention, wellness, and a balanced lifestyle. The Vice-Chancellor further remarked that regular practice of yoga helps relax the mind, reduce stress, and promote overall well-being. He encouraged students and staff members to incorporate yoga and its various asanas into their daily routine to achieve a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
Earlier, Dr. Kamaljeet Singh Suri, Director Students’ Welfare, PAU, delivered the welcome address. He highlighted that yoga is an ancient practice that originated in India and has been embraced enthusiastically across the world. He noted that yoga serves as a bridge between physical fitness, mental peace, and spiritual harmony, making it highly relevant in today's fast-paced life.
The event concluded with a pledge by the participants to adopt yoga as a regular part of their daily lives and to spread awareness about the numerous benefits of yoga among society.
