The African Biodigester Component (ABC), implemented by GIZ Kenya in partnership with ABPL, has launched a nationwide training programme aimed at strengthening Kenya’s clean energy workforce and promoting productive use of biogas technologies.
The programme is training 50 technicians across various counties in Kenya with hands-on skills to install and retrofit biogas-powered equipment such as generators, chaff cutters, millers, incubators, brooders, and milk pasteurisers.
It supports the scale-up of over 20,000 small and 250 medium biodigesters by enhancing technical capacity, strengthening after-sales services, and promoting green enterprise development to improve rural livelihoods.
Currently, a 3-day training in Karatina, Nyeri County, is building local expertise in the productive use of biogas by bringing together 16 technicians from Nakuru, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Nanyuki, Laikipia, Kiambu, Kitui, Nairobi, Meru, Kirinyaga, and Murang’a.

The African Biodigester Component (ABC), implemented in Kenya by GIZ and SNV in partnership with Africa Bioenergy Programmes Ltd. (ABPL), has launched a nationwide Productive Use of Biogas (PUB) training program aimed at strengthening the country’s clean energy workforce. Through this initiative, 50 biodigester technicians across five counties will be equipped with hands-on skills to retrofit gasoline engines and install productive-use appliances that run on biogas—including chaff cutters, generators, millers, incubators, brooders, and milk pasteurizers. Currently we have trained 26 trainees in Productive use from Baringo, Nyamira, Kericho, Eldoret, Kitale, Kakamega, Taita Taveta, Bomet, Kisumu, Nandi, Siaya, Vihiga and Uasin Gishu counties.
The training supports ABC’s broader goal of accelerating the adoption of over 20,000 small and 250 medium biodigesters by enhancing technical capacity, improving after‑sales service, and expanding opportunities for green enterprise development. By building local expertise in biogas technologies, the program contributes to Kenya’s clean energy transition, strengthens rural livelihoods, and promotes sustainable, affordable energy solutions for households and agricultural communities.
