The National Crime Research Centre (NCRC) yesterday held a consultative meeting with the Chief of Staff and Head of the Public Service, Mr. Felix Koskei, on the recent incidents of student unrest reported in schools across the country.

The discussions drew on findings from NCRC’s research on school unrest and examined key contributing factors, including drug and substance abuse, parental influences, student welfare concerns, school governance challenges, policy changes, and broader societal pressures.

Student protests, school unrest, and incidents of arson have increasingly become a matter of national concern. A trend has emerged where school fires appear to be deliberate, recurring, and, in some cases, ritualistic acts within schools. According to NCRC’s report, 'Rapid Assessment of Arson Crisis in Secondary Schools in Kenya', cases of school unrest are particularly prevalent during the second term of the academic calendar. NCRC provides key recommendations for addressing and preventing these incidents in schools.
