Setting Standards: The Kenyan delegation attending the International Engineering Alliance (IEA) Meetings held a strategic engagement with representatives of the Jamaica Professional Engineering Board to exchange experiences and explore opportunities for collaboration in strengthening engineering education, accreditation systems and professional practice.

The meeting, led by Principal Secretary for Roads Eng. Joseph Mbugua and attended by EBK's Ag. CEO/Registrar Eng. Grace Onyango, Chairman of the Jamaica Professional Engineering Board Eng. Glaister Rickett and Registrar Dr. Lynette Bailey, focused on knowledge sharing and benchmarking as Jamaica advances its own engineering standards and international recognition agenda.

Drawing from Kenya's experience in attaining Provisional Signatory status to the Washington Accord, Eng. Grace Onyango shared the milestones achieved, lessons learned and institutional reforms undertaken throughout the accession process. She underscored the importance of structured mentorship, continuous stakeholder engagement and strict adherence to International Engineering Alliance standards and regulatory requirements in successfully navigating the journey towards international recognition.

Reaffirming Kenya's commitment to regional and international collaboration, Principal Secretary Eng. Joseph Mbugua expressed Kenya's readiness to provide the necessary technical support and share its experiences with Jamaica as it strengthens its engineering accreditation and professional systems. He also encouraged the Jamaican delegation to engage with Kenyan engineering deans and academic institutions to facilitate benchmarking, information exchange and the sharing of best practices on engineering education standards and accreditation processes.

Strengthening Global Partnerships: As part of Kenya's continued engagement at the International Engineering Alliance (IEA) Meetings 2026 in Cape Town, the Kenyan delegation, led by Principal Secretary for Roads Eng. Joseph Mbugua and accompanied by EBK Acting CEO/Registrar Eng. Grace Onyango, held a high-level meeting with IEA President Prof. Elizabeth Taylor to advance discussions on international collaboration in engineering education and professional practice.

The engagement focused on strengthening cooperation in areas that support the global recognition of Kenyan engineering qualifications, promote international mobility for engineering professionals, and enhance alignment with internationally recognised accreditation and competency standards.

The discussions also explored opportunities for capacity building, knowledge exchange, technical collaboration, and the development of future-ready engineering competencies to respond to emerging global challenges and technological advancements.

These engagements reinforce the country's commitment to attaining Full Signatory status under the Washington Accord and to continuously strengthening the quality of engineering education and professional practice in line with international best practices.

Through sustained collaboration with global partners, Kenya is positioning itself to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of engineering excellence while expanding opportunities for its graduates and professionals on the international stage.

Professional Development: At the IEA Meetings 2026, the Principal Secretary, State Department for Roads, Eng. Joseph Mbugua, together with The Engineers Board of Kenya CEO/Registrar, Eng. Grace Onyango held a high-level engagement with Eng. Refilwe Buthelezi of the Federation of African Engineering Organisations (FAEO) to discuss strengthening international collaboration and advancing harmonized standards in engineering education and professional practice.

The discussions highlighted the importance of strategic partnerships, knowledge exchange and closer cooperation among signatories to the International Engineering Alliance (IEA) Accords and Agreements, with a shared focus on enhancing the quality, recognition and global competitiveness of engineering education and professional practice.

In acknowledging the unwavering support of Kenya's State Department for Roads in the country's journey towards attaining Full Signatory status under the Washington Accord, the FAEO President commended Kenya's commitment to strengthening engineering education and professional standards.

She further called upon African countries to work collectively towards compliance with the IEA Accords and Agreements, emphasizing the importance of harmonized accreditation systems and competency frameworks in promoting internationally recognized engineering standards across the continent.

She also underscored the value of structured mentorship and capacity-building initiatives to strengthen institutional capabilities, enhance engineering skills and facilitate the seamless cross-border mobility of engineering professionals, ultimately contributing to Africa's integration into the global engineering community.

Professional Development: The Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) is participating in the IEA Meetings 2026 in Cape Town, led by Eng. Joseph Mbugua, Principal Secretary, State Department for Roads to present Kenya’s progress report on milestones achieved since acceding to the Washington Accord as a provisional signatory at the IEAM 2025 that was held in Mexico.

One year after attaining Provisional Signatory status to the Washington Accord, we remain firmly committed to achieving full signatory status, advancing global recognition for Kenyan engineering education and practice.

Professional Development: This week, the conducted an Outcome-Based Education (OBE) training workshop at Kabarak University for its engineering lecturers and staff, focusing on aligning the proposed Electrical and Electronics Engineering programme with OBE principles in line with Washington Accord standards.

Speaking at the event, The Engineers Board of Kenya Ag. Registrar/CEO, Eng. Grace Onyango, noted that the Board is currently transitioning all engineering programmes to align with Washington Accord standards as part of Kenya’s pursuit of full signatory status. She stated that EBK has been conducting regional Outcome-Based Education (OBE) training workshops for engineering lecturers and university staff whose programmes are accredited and recognized by the Board.

She further emphasized that achieving full signatory status requires alignment of the entire engineering education pipeline with international standards.

Kabarak University was commended for its commitment to developing its proposed engineering program in accordance with the Washington Accord requirements, even prior to the formal submission.

This proactive approach makes Kabarak University the first institution in Kenya to take such an initiative. The CEO encouraged the training participants to use the training to enhance their understanding of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) and the accreditation standards set by the Engineering Board of Kenya (EBK).

Prof. Christopher Maghanga, Associate Professor at Kabarak University, appreciated EBK for the continued support and guidance on the development of its engineering programme. He noted the university’s strong commitment to developing an engineering programme aligned with international standards and expressed optimism that by the time EBK returns to review the programme, the university would have futher strengthened its curriculum, fully addressed identified gaps, and made substantial progress towards meeting Washington Accord requirements.

Engineering Safety: Building safer construction sites begins with building safer professionals.

The Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK), with support from Lloyd’s Register Foundation (LRF), continues to spearhead a transformative programme aimed at strengthening safety culture within Kenya’s construction industry.

The initiative focuses on equipping engineering students, practitioners, and construction workers with practical safety knowledge and skills through curriculum development, industry short courses, construction site monitoring tools, and policy reforms designed to enhance compliance and reduce workplace accidents.

The Board convened a finalization workshop bringing together stakeholders from academia, industry, and regulatory institutions, with support from DOSH, to streamline and finalize 11 identified industry short courses and advance the development of safety policy frameworks for the construction sector.

Since the launch of the programme, key milestones achieved include nationwide stakeholder surveys, establishment of technical working groups, strategic engagements with industry regulators, curriculum development for engineering students, and the design of monitoring tools to strengthen safety compliance on construction sites.

Through collaboration, innovation, and capacity building, EBK remains committed to fostering a proactive safety culture and supporting safer infrastructure development across Kenya’s engineering value chain.

Professional Development: The Engineers Board of Kenya is conducting a Professional Engineers Registration Training Workshop for Graduate Engineers drawn from various institutions drawn from , Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited, National Communication Authority - NCA, Kenya Pipeline Company, , , Kenya Civil Aviation Authority - KCAA, , .

The workshop focused on the PE registration process, preparation of Training & Experience Reports and Project Reports.

The Ag. Registrar/CEO Eng. Grace Onyango emphasized the Board’s commitment to registering more Professional Engineers and supporting graduate engineers through mentorship, capacity building and streamlining of digital services via the Engineers Portal.

To date, over 2,000 engineers have been trained through PER workshops and over 4,000 through pre-submission conferences as the Board continues to strengthen professional engineering practice in Kenya.
