The UN Human Rights expert Elizabeth Salmón, in a communication with China, urged to uphold its international human rights obligations and refrain from forcibly repatriating a DPRK escapee, highlighting the absolute principle of non-refoulement and the serious risk of harm upon return to DPRK.

이번주 유엔인권사무소 서울사무소는 포항과 공주를 방문하여, 학생들과 만나는 시간을 가졌습니다. 한동대학교에서는 유엔이 직접 들어갈 수 없는 국가를 대상으로 어떻게 원격 모니터링을 통해 증거를 수집하고 진상 조사를 실시하는지 설명했습니다. 국립공주대학교에서는 조선민주주의인민공화국 내 인권 상황과 관련한 유엔 인권 메커니즘을 설명했습니다.

인권 문제에 대해 참여하고 옹호 활동을 벌이며 주도적으로 나서는 다수의 청년들을 만날 수 있었습니다.

This week, UN Human Rights Office - Seoul travelled to Pohang and Kongju and met with university students. At Handong Global University, we discussed how the UN undertakes remote monitoring to collect evidence and conduct fact-finding in countries where we do not have access. At Kongju National University Kongju National University, we introduced UN human rights mechanisms relevant to the human rights situation in the DPRK.

We continue to witness many youths inspired to engage, advocate, and lead on human rights issues.

6∙25전쟁 중 잡혀가셨던 과거 국군포로의 작고 소식에 깊은 애도의 마음을 전합니다. 고인은 조선민주주의인민공화국에서 수십 년 간 강제노동과 인권 침해를 견뎌야 했습니다.

고인은 생전의 마지막 몇 해를 진실과 정의 실현에 바쳤습니다. 2026년 5월 대한민국 법원에 다섯 명의 과거 국군포로가 제기한 소송의 원고 중 한 분으로, 조선민주주의인민공화국에 의한 인권 침해에 대한 보상을 청구했습니다. 서울중앙지방법원은 2026년 5월 14일 원고 승소 판결을 내렸습니다. 바로 다음날 돌아가신 고인의 가슴 아픈 사연은 지연된 정의는 정의가 아니라는 것을 다시 한 번 상기시켜 줍니다.

조선민주주의인민공화국에서 대한민국으로 돌아온 80명의 국군포로 중 오직 다섯 분만 생존해 계십니다.

조선민주주의인민공화국에 아직 남아있는 국군포로의 생사 및 행방을 즉각 공개하고, 이들을 송환하고, 여전히 계속되고 있는 인권 침해를 중단할 것을 촉구합니다. 국제공동체 또한 피해자 및 가족의 진실 모색, 책임 규명, 명예 회복을 위해 조속히 행동을 취해야 합니다.

We extend our deepest condolences on the passing of a former Korean War POW who endured decades of forced labour and human rights violations in the DPRK.

He devoted his final years to seeking truth and justice. He was one of five former POWs who filed a lawsuit before a court in the ROK in March 2026, seeking compensation for human rights violations committed by the DPRK. On 14 May 2026, the Seoul Central District Court ruled in their favour. That he passed away just one day after this decision is a painful reminder that justice delayed is justice denied.

Only five of the 80 former POWs who returned from the DPRK remain alive in the ROK.

We call on the DPRK to immediately clarify the fate and whereabouts of all remaining POWs, ensure their return, and end ongoing violations. The international community must act with urgency to secure truth, accountability, and dignity for victims and their families.

UN expert on human rights in , Elizabeth Salmón, calls for inputs from all stakeholders on the situation of the right to life in the DPRK. The inputs will be included in her report to the 81st General Assembly session in October 2026.
