British Council delivers Cambridge English Qualifications in Sri Lanka and the Maldives to learners who want to improve their English proficiency and demonstrate it with a globally recognised qualification.
To support and enhance the quality of English language teaching across our partner schools, we delivered a free 12-hour workshop, "Teaching for Exam Success: Strategies for ESL Teachers." The workshop was led by Fazla Razak, ESL Teacher and Teacher Trainer, and brought together 58 teachers on 12 and 19 June at NH Collection Colombo.
The workshop was designed to equip ESL teachers with practical strategies and effective classroom techniques for preparing students for Cambridge English examinations. Participants gained a deeper understanding of exam formats, assessment criteria, and skill-focused teaching approaches that help learners develop the language competencies and exam skills needed to perform confidently across a range of Cambridge English Qualifications.
By the end of the two-day workshop, participants were able to:
✔ Understand exam formats and task requirements across different levels of Cambridge English Qualifications.
✔ Apply effective exam preparation strategies to support student success in reading, listening, writing and speaking.
✔ Teach exam skills strategically, helping learners approach tasks confidently and overcome common challenges.
✔ Use diagnostic tools and Can Do statements to identify learner needs and support goal setting.
✔ Support mixed-ability classes with practical strategies for helping all learners, including those who need additional support.
✔ Deliver engaging and motivating exam preparation lessons that encourage active participation, sustained learning and greater confidence on exam day.

As part of her visit to Sri Lanka, the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) Director for South Asia and Afghanistan (SAAD), Laura Beaufils toured British Council accompanied by High Commissioner Andrew Patrick and Country Director Orlando Edwards.
It was a pleasure to welcome Laure Beaufils to the British Council Colombo.
She saw firsthand the scale and diversity of our work – the Certificate in English Language Teaching to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) training in action, an IELTS on Computer Exams Test Centre, young learners engaged in English classes, the reach of our digital library, and impactful programmes like Youth Climate Ambassadors and Educating Girls for Climate Action.
Meeting partners across transnational education, the arts, and civil society reinforced a simple truth: lasting growth comes from investing in people – especially young people.
Proud of the role our partnerships play in opening up opportunities and supporting the next generation to succeed.
