🇬🇧 Freshwater ponds in our nature reserves become vital lifelines in summer, supporting a rich web of life from painted frogs and damselflies to birds, reptiles and more. A small pool, but a big role in sustaining biodiversity during Malta’s harshest months.

Salina Nature Reserve
Salina Nature Reserve Salina is open for visits on all days. Entrance to the reserve is free of charge but donations are welcome.
Visitors may walk through part of the park freely Monday to Sunday (April to September 7am-8pm, October to March 7am-6pm). Salina Nature Reserve is a protected area forming part of the Natura 2000 network and also a Special Area of Conservation, managed by BirdLife Malta.
Hidden beneath the waters of the Salina wetland, a rare and remarkable plant is making a comeback.
Following habitat restoration carried out two years ago, the Beaked Tassel Pondweed (Ruppia maritima), Ruppja tas-salini in Maltese, is now thriving once again, providing shelter for Mediterranean killifish and supporting wetland birdlife. 🌿💧

🌊 March at Salina – time to get to work! 🌿
Each March, as wintering birds depart and before spring migrants begin to arrive, we return to clear the mud, drain the pans, and prepare for a new salt season. 💪🧂
It’s hands-on, it’s hard work - and it helps protect and sustain this unique site.
