Cultured meat being studied as alternative protein source to bolster food security 12/06/2026

Malaysia’s exploration of cultured meat as an alternative protein source marks an important step toward strengthening national food security, diversifying protein sources, reducing Malaysia’s dependence on beef imports, and lowering the environmental footprint of conventional meat production.

ASM facilitated the coordination of the Task Force on the Cultured Meat Feasibility Study, led by Professor Dato’ Dr Zulkifli Idrus FASc, Chair of the ASM Agriculture Committee and MOI on Food Sovereignty & Security. The Task Force brought together scientific expertise to assess Malaysia’s readiness across key areas, including R&D, regulation, halal integrity, industry potential, and public confidence.

This initiative directly supports the National Mission-Oriented Initiative (MOI) on Food Sovereignty and Security and aligns with the broader aspirations of the National Planetary Health Action Plan (NPHAP) to promote sustainable and resilient food systems. Through science-based policy advice, strategic foresight, and coordinated expertise, ASM continues to support national efforts to shape a more sustainable, competitive, and future-ready food ecosystem.

The ASM 2026 IdeaXchange, Planet-Friendly Business: Stories of Purpose and Impact, brought together thought leaders, industry players, innovators and sustainability advocates to explore how businesses can respond to today’s environmental and economic challenges through practical, purpose-driven solutions.

Organised by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM), with support from Friends of Sustainable Malaysia (FoSM), the event was held on 4 June 2026 and featured several sessions that explored in depth the relationship between business operations and environmental sustainability. A key highlight was the sharing of personal experiences by business owners, who spoke about their journeys in establishing enterprises that place environmental responsibility, waste minimisation and sustainability at the core of their business values.

Overall, the programme served as an important platform to encourage reflection on how businesses can grow more responsibly in line with today’s sustainability needs. It also reinforced the importance of collective action in shaping a future where economic progress and environmental responsibility can move forward together.
