From container ships to supermarket shelves NSI Metrology in trade
Did you know NSI regulates all measuring instruments used for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Container Weight Verification regulation?
Before a shipping container leaves a Namibian port, its verified gross mass (VGM) must be accurately declared. Inaccurate container weights have caused ships to capsize.
NSI ensures the weighbridges and load cells used for VGM compliance are accurate and traceable to international standards. From the port to the warehouse to the supermarket shelf, metrology is the thread of trust running through Namibia’s entire trade chain.
Trade moves on trust. Trust is built on measurement.

Can you spot the instrument that needs verification?
Time for a quiz! Look at these four measuring instruments. Only some carry an NSI verification mark. Can you spot which? (Swipe to see the answers)
An NSI verification mark means:
- The instrument has been checked by a legal metrology officer
- It measures accurately within required tolerances
- It is legally authorised for use in trade
If you’re a business owner using weighing scales, fuel dispensers, or any other trade measuring instrument you are LEGALLY REQUIRED to have them verified.

Speed cameras. Breathalysers. NSI verifies them all.
This one might surprise you.
The speed camera that catches a speeding driver. The evidential breathalyser used by traffic police. Even the weighbridge at a border post.
All of these measuring instruments must be verified by NSI before they can be used in law enforcement in Namibia.
Why? Because a fine or prosecution based on an inaccurate instrument is not justice it’s an error.
NSI’s legal metrology division ensures the instruments that enforce our laws are fair, accurate, and legally defensible.
That’s metrology protecting not just your wallet, but your rights.

What is calibration and does your business need it?
Calibration is the process of comparing your measuring instrument against a known reference standard to verify its accuracy.
Sound technical? Here’s the plain-language version:
- You have a scale at your shop or factory
- Over time, scales drift and become inaccurate
- Calibration tells you HOW inaccurate — and corrects it
- NSI issues a calibration certificate which indicates the status of your instrument’s accuracy.
Under the Metrology Act, working standards must be calibrated annually. NSI provides accredited calibration services for mass, volume, temperature, and Dimension.

Today, the Namibian Standards Institution (NSI) hosted the Metrology Technician Stakeholder Workshop on Metrology Compliance Requirements for all measuring instruments at the Windhoek Country Club.
The workshop, officially opened through remarks from NSI CEO Dr. Eino Mvula and delivered by Head of Metrology, Mr. Simasiku Matali, brought together industry representatives, registered metrology technicians, and key stakeholders to strengthen understanding of the Metrology Act, 2022 and its regulatory requirements.
The engagement focused not only to strengthen understanding of the legal and regulatory requirements governing the repair and maintenance of measuring instruments and the registration of metrology technicians, but also to facilitate meaningful engagement on the practical realities of implementation. We recognize that an effective regulatory framework must be supported by continuous dialogue with those responsible for its application and compliance.
The workshop further thought to enhance compliance, measurement integrity, and fostering collaboration between regulators and industry players to ensure accurate, reliable, and trusted measurements that support consumer protection, fair trade, public confidence, and Namibia’s economic growth.
NSI remains committed to building a transparent, effective, and collaborative metrology system that upholds quality standards across all sectors in Namibia.
