Dish of the week - Penicillium isariiforme:
Have you seen the wall full of petri dishes in ARTIS-Micropia? There are more than 300 of them in the museum! One of them is this one.
🔎 Penicillium isariiforme belongs to the Penicillium genus, best known for its connection to antibiotics and food production, but many species remain relatively unexplored.
🥝 Unlike its famous relatives that produce penicillin, P. isariiforme is mainly associated with the breakdown of organic material and can occasionally be involved in food spoilage.
🌱 In nature, it plays an important role in decomposition, helping recycle nutrients back into the ecosystem.

Dish of the week – Fusarium avenaceum
Have you noticed the wall of over 300 Petri dishes at ARTIS-Micropia? One of them features this remarkable fungus.
♻️ Fusarium avenaceum plays an important role in breaking down organic material, contributing to the recycling of nutrients in soil — a vital process for healthy ecosystems.
🎨 On culture plates, it can form velvety colonies with striking natural pigmentation, ranging from soft pink and violet tones to creamy whites. Under the microscope, it reveals an unexpectedly elegant appearance.
❄️ Unlike many fungi that prefer warmer conditions, F. avenaceum is well adapted to cooler environments, highlighting the resilience and versatility of microbial life.

Dish of the week - Ulocladium alternariae
Have you spotted the wall of 300+ petri dishes in ARTIS-Micropia? One of them holds this one:
👭 Ulocladium alternariae closely resembles species from the genus Alternaria and is often mistaken for it due to its similar dark, soot-like spores.
🗺️This fungus is found worldwide, particularly in temperate and subtropical regions. It thrives wherever decaying leaves and plant material are present.
🍂 Its presence tends to increase in autumn, when fallen leaves provide plenty of nutrients. So when you’re raking leaves, you may also be releasing some Ulocladium spores into the air.

Dish of the week - Penicillium italicum
Have you spotted the wall of 300+ petri dishes in ARTIS-Micropia? One of them holds this one:
🩵 This fungus produces striking blue-green spores, created by natural pigments that become especially visible under the microscope.
🍊P. italicum is often associated with citrus fruits, where it frequently appears on the peel of oranges and lemons.
☁️Its microscopic spores travel easily through the air. When they settle in the right environment, new fungal growth can begin.
