DA-PCC equips CHB beneficiaries with carabao management skills

The DA-PCC at Visayas State University (DA-PCC at VSU) conducted Social Preparation Training (SPT) and Carabao Management Training in various project sites across Eastern Visayas from May to June 2026 to enhance the knowledge and skills of Carabao Herd Buildup (CHB) Project beneficiaries.

The training activities were held on May 5โ€“6 in Baybay City, Leyte; May 8 in Carigara, Leyte; June 2โ€“3 in Javier, Leyte; June 4โ€“5 in Paranas, Samar; and June 9โ€“10 in Macrohon, Southern Leyte. The training series gathered CHB beneficiaries and farmer-partners to equip them with essential knowledge and practical skills necessary for effective carabao management and sustainable livestock production.

The CHB Project aims to increase the carabao population through the dispersal of quality dairy and breeder animals, enhance farmersโ€™ income through sustainable livestock production, and strengthen local breeding programs to ensure a steady supply of genetically improved carabaos.

The training covered key topics on carabao production and management delivered by DA-PCC at VSU resource speakers. Agricultural Technician II Renato F. Briones facilitated the SPT, which aimed to strengthen participants' understanding of their roles and responsibilities as CHB beneficiaries and to encourage active participation in project implementation.

Agricultural Technician II Ric B. Posas discussed feeds and feeding management, highlighting proper nutrition practices that support animal health and productivity, as well as breeding and reproductive management strategies to improve herd performance and breeding efficiency.

Meanwhile, CBED Coordinator Jimmy Espina Jr. and Agricultural Technician I Resurrecion D. Ordiz delivered lectures on โ€œNurturing the Future Herd: Management of Pregnant and Dairy Calvesโ€ and record keeping, emphasizing the proper care of pregnant animals and young stock, as well as the importance of maintaining accurate farm records for effective herd management and decision-making.

Through these activities, participants gained valuable insights into proper animal husbandry practices, nutrition, breeding management, and farm record documentation, enabling them to improve herd productivity and animal health. [By: Annie Bolotaolo]

Isang halimbawa ng tunay na kalayaan ay kakayahang higitan ang nakasanayan. ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ

Leyte farmer-beneficiaries receive 10 pregnant buffaloes

In line with its continuing efforts to strengthen livestock production and support rural livelihoods, the DA-Philippine Carabao Center at Visayas State University (DA-PCC at VSU) spearheaded the entrustment of 10 pregnant crossbred dairy buffaloes under the Carabao Herd Buildup (CHB) Project to farmer-beneficiaries in Carigara and Baybay City, Leyte on June 2, 2026.

The Macalpi Community Multi-purpose Cooperative (MCMC) in Carigara received two buffaloes, while the Hibunawan Integrated Farmersโ€™ Association (HIFA) in Baybay City was entrusted with eight buffaloes.

The CHB Project is a continuing initiative that aims to expand the population of genetically improved dairy animals, enhance local breeding programs, and boost livestock productivity among farmer-beneficiaries. By providing quality breeding stocks, the project supports the development of sustainable livelihood opportunities and strengthens community-based dairy enterprises in the region.

Through these interventions, the DA-PCC at VSU continues to support local farmers and farmer organizations in building a more resilient and productive livestock sector in Eastern Visayas. [By: Annie Bolotaolo]
