Naniniwala si NCSC Chairperson and CEO Atty. Ma.

β€œIt is not merely a symbolic gesture; it is a stark, quantifiable metric of public demand. These
signatures represent a direct, undeniable petition to the government to explicitly recognize the dignity and rights of our senior citizens,” ani Atty. Gutierrez.

Liwanag ng Paningin: Promoting Eye Health Services for Senior Citizens

DAVAO CITY β€” Promoting accessible and community-based healthcare services for older persons, the National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC) Region XI, headed by Regional Director Cesar A. Adegue IV, PhD, CESE, and represented by Julius R. Duterte, PDO III, and Francis Lorenz Munar, PDO I, successfully conducted β€œLiwanag ng Paningin: Cataract Screening para sa Senior Citizens” on May 6, 2026, in Barangay Cabantian, Davao City.

The initiative was made possible through a robust partnership with the Davao Medical School Foundation (DMSF), Barangay Cabantian, led by Hon. Nilo C. Cabiles, the Barangay Council's Chairperson for Senior Citizens Kag. Ricardo B. Justol, and the Federation of Senior Citizens of Cabantian, headed by President Jaime B. Banzon.

The activity focused on elevating eye health awareness and providing free screenings for cataractsβ€”a progressive clouding of the eye’s natural lens that stands as the leading cause of preventable blindness worldwide, particularly among aging populations. Around 300 senior citizens participated in the event, reflecting a strong community response and highlighting the critical need for localized, accessible vision care.

As we age, proteins in the eye's lens clump together, gradually blurring vision, fading colors, and increasing glare. Left untreated, advanced cataracts severely restrict independent living, increase the risk of falls, and diminish overall quality of life.

During the screening, several beneficiaries received immediate medical consultations and prescription medications to manage age-related eye conditions. Furthermore, approximately 80 senior citizens were identified with advanced visual impairment and officially endorsed for specialized A-Scan procedures at the DMSF Hospital.

An A-Scan (ultrasound biometry) is a crucial diagnostic tool that uses high-frequency sound waves to measure the exact length of the eye. Eye specialists require these precise measurements to calculate the correct optical power of the intraocular lens (IOL)β€”the artificial lens that permanently replaces the cloudy natural lens during cataract surgery. This detailed pre-operative tracking ensures that the upcoming surgeries at DMSF Hospital will be highly accurate, tailored to each patient, and optimized to restore clear vision.

This initiative underscores the immense value of collaborative healthcare efforts in addressing the specific medical vulnerabilities of senior citizens. By facilitating early detection and creating a direct, seamless pathway to corrective surgery, the partners are actively mitigating vision loss before it leads to permanent disability.

Through sustained partnerships and targeted community-based outreach, NCSC Region XI continues to bridge the gap in healthcare accessibility for senior citizens, ensuring that vital, life-changing medical interventions are brought straight to the heart of the communities they serve.
