DAVAO CITY, Philippines โ With the Davao Region continuing to experience periodic tremors, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. XI (MGB XI) actively participated in the 2nd Quarter National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED). The activity aims to strengthen disaster preparedness, reinforce emergency protocols, and cultivate a deeply ingrained culture of safety among bureau personnel.
At the sounding of the alarm, MGB XI officials and staff immediately executed the standard earthquake response procedure: "Duck, Cover, and Hold."
As an agency deeply embedded in geosciences and geological hazard assessment, MGB XI highlights that while earthquakes remain unpredictable, proactive readiness is the most effective shield against risks.

On June 8, 2026, a powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off the southern coast of Mindanao. The ground didnโt just shake; it roared. When that magnitude 7.8 earthquake ripped through the region, it didnโt care about provincial borders. It tore up critical infrastructure, paralyzed major highways, and cut off entire towns. In the absolute chaos that followed, local communities faced a terrifying double blow: isolated by debris and stripped of basic necessities like water and medicine.
But amid the aftershocks and collapsing terrain, a different kind of story began to take shape. Instead of waiting around for standard relief pipelines to clear, the mining sector rapidly pivoted from moving earth to saving lives. The call for help quickly became a rallying cry for the wider industry. Recognizing the sheer volume of displaced families, the Philippine Mine Safety and Environment Association (PMSEA), along with Apex Mining Co., Inc. (AMCI).
went straight into the rubble.
With land routes severely blocked, the DENR and the Office of Civil Defense issued an urgent call for specialized assistance. AMCI didn't hesitate. They deployed their Search Rescue Team directly into the hardest-hit, isolated zones. These are teams trained specifically for subterranean environments and structural collapses; the crews were working alongside national agencies, risking their own lives through volatile aftershocks.
While the rescue teams were digging through wreckage on the ground, AMCIโs Community Relations (ComRel) division and PMSEA were organizing a massive logistical counter-offensive.
They called it Oplan Tabang (Operation Help), focusing squarely on displaced families across Region XII.
The team structured their relief packages that were requested to hit those exact vulnerabilities:
โข 2,000 Hygiene Kits: Packed with basic essentials to keep families clean and healthyโbath soap, tissue, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, alcohol, and wet wipes.
โข 2,000 Five-Liter Bottled Waters: Providing clean, immediate drinking water, whose local pipes and wells were completely destroyed.
If this crisis proved anything, itโs that a company's most valuable asset isn't what they pull out of the groundโit's how they show up for people when their world falls apart.
Through the combined forces of AMCIโs frontline rescuers, dedicated ComRel funding, and industry-wide backing from PMSEA, Oplan Tabang provided more than just supplies. As Southern Mindanao begins the long, grueling process of clearing roads and rebuilding homes, they do so knowing that when the earth split open, neighbors they didn't even know they had stood firm to help hold them together.
This isn't just about who will get the credit; this is about getting essentials into the hands of people sitting in evacuation centers who have lost everything. They don't care whose logo is on the box or which agency signed the paperwork. They just need to know they haven't been forgotten.
