Imagine standing before this balcony on June 12, 1898, as the air filled with the gravity and anticipation of a historic proclamation.

It was here that the words of the "Acta de la Proclamation de la Independencia del Pueblo Filipino" first rang out, read by Ambrosio Rianzares Bautista, a noted Filipino lawyer and Aguinaldo's adviser, who was commissioned to write it.

Flanked by these 19th-century canons, the balcony served as the stage where a nationโ€™s aspiration finally found its voice. You can almost hear the shouts of the crowd as the Banda Matanda of San Francisco de Malabon played Juliรกn Felipe's original composition of the Philippine National Anthem.

As we mark the 128th anniversary of Philippine Independence, we return to the site of that first triumph and ask: what does June 12 mean for us today? ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ
