On the 165th birth anniversary of José Rizal, we remember the enduring ties between the Philippines’ national hero and Germany. 🇩🇪🇵🇭
During his recent visit to the Philippines, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier viewed the original manuscript of Noli Me Tangere, the novel Rizal completed and published in Berlin in 1887. Decades later, Germany supported the restoration of this treasured manuscript, helping preserve an important piece of Philippine history for future generations. 📖
Rizal's legacy continues to connect our two countries through a shared commitment to education, culture, and the power of ideas.💡

🇩🇪🤝🇵🇭
“I think it was high time for a visit by a German Federal President”: for the first time in 60 years, a German head of state is visiting the Philippines.
Federal President Steinmeier emphasized the country’s growing importance for Germany: “As a like-minded partner in upholding the global order, peace and stability in Asia; in cooperation between the ASEAN community of states and Germany and the EU; in connecting our economies; in combating climate change and its consequences; and, of course, not least in bringing our peoples closer together through the migration of skilled workers.”
During the meeting with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to a rules-based international order, stability in the Indo-Pacific, and close cooperation on security policy. Economic ties are also strong: around 300 German companies are already active in the Philippines, including firms in the pharmaceutical, logistics, financial services, and aircraft maintenance sectors. Skilled labor migration is also of major importance, having long closely linked the two countries, and is set to be expanded further.
At Lufthansa Technik Philippines, one of the world’s largest maintenance centers for wide-body aircraft, the Federal President learned about the training of skilled Filipino workers.
With a wreath-laying ceremony, the Federal President paid tribute to the legacy of national hero José Rizal. Rizal spent formative years of his life in Germany, where his novel Noli Me Tangere was published in 1887. Afterwards, the Federal President spoke with Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Ressa, who reported on her work for press freedom and democracy.
