Damo nga salamat, Tacloban! 🇵🇭🇮🇪
Ambassador Emma Hickey and the Embassy team had a productive and memorable journey in Tacloban and greater Leyte from opening the Cine Europa Philippines film festival to visiting MacArthur’s landing.
Together with European Union in the Philippines Ambassador Massimo Santoro, Ambassador Hickey paid courtesy calls on Governor Carlos Jericho L. Petilla and Mayor Alfred S. Romualdez, who shared insights on Leyte’s development, including the work undertaken in rebuilding and rehabilitating communities following the devastation caused by Typhoon Yolanda in 2013. We also visited the Holy Cross Memorial paying tribute to all those who lost their lives.
We met with local journalists, lawyers, human rights defenders and fisherfolk and even found time to try local delicacies like roscas, suman latik, moron and binagol.
It has truly been a wonderful visit, and we are grateful for the warm welcome from all the people of Tacloban throughout our trip.
Maraming salamat, Tacloban! We shall return.

While Ireland has four proud provinces, the Federated States of Micronesia similarly are made up of four strong states. Ambassador Emma Hickey was honoured to be the first Irish Ambassador to visit the beautiful country when she presented her credentials to H.E. President Simina last week. During her Mission she had the opportunity to discuss strengthening bilateral relations with the President and Vice-President, Ministers from across government, the Speaker of the Parliament and Governor of Ponhpei state. She met with the Chuuk Women’s Council and participants of an Irish funded programme on the empowerment of young women as well as civil society active across the North Pacific. She also witnessed first-hand the devastation caused by Typhoon Sinlaku and met with UN agencies supporting the response. Many thanks to FSM Department of Affairs for all their assistance with the visit.
