In a grand commemoration of half a century of leadership, camaraderie, and academic excellence, the UST Chemical Engineering Society recently hosted Legacy: A Golden Celebration.
The milestone event was held on April 18, 2026, at the Buenaventura Garcia Paredes, O.P. Building (BGPOP) Lobby and Mezzanine. This gathering honored the organization's rich history while celebrating its present achievements and future endeavors within the Thomasian chemical engineering community.
As a highlight of the evening, UST ChES featured two distinguished past presidents as keynote speakers: Engr. Romeo P. Sangalang, who led the society from 1979 to 1980, and Engr. Niña Diana Alonzo, who served from 2006 to 2007. Their journeys and professional insights served as a testament to the legacy of excellence built by visionary Thomasian engineers over the past five decades.
The night was filled with inspiring tributes and shared memories, successfully commemorating 50 years of the UST Chemical Engineering Society and setting the stage for the next half century.

Chemical engineering students completed their Educational Tour for their CHE2138 (Plant Inspections and Seminars) course, a core academic requirement designed to bridge theoretical concepts with practical industrial applications. The students were divided into two groups that embarked on different itineraries from April 6 to 11, 2026.
Group 1 completed Tour Project 1 (Tour Luzon). This group of 14 student delegates conducted local plant inspections across Pampanga, La Union, and Benguet, mentored by Engr. Edgar Clyde R. Lopez, Ph.D. They executed technical inspections at the Hermosa Ecozone Industrial Park WWTP, Pampanga's Best Inc., Asia Pacific Energy Corp., Lepanto Mining Inc., and the Baguio Sewerage Treatment Plant.
Group 2 completed Tour Project 2 (Tour Taiwan). This distinct group of 84 student delegates undertook a 6-day itinerary in Taipei, Taiwan. Mentored by Prof. Lola Domnina B. Pestaño, Ph.D., Asst. Prof. Vilma G. Santos, MSME, MAT, Asst. Prof. Carol M. Encarnado, MSc, and Asst. Prof. George Y. Chao Jr., MEng., they executed technical inspections at the Formosa Plastic Exhibition, Uni-President Enterprises Corp. - Hsinchu Hukou Factory, Dihua Sewage Treatment Plant, Neihu Refuse Incineration Plant, and Beitou Refuse Incineration Plant.
Through these industry tours, all delegates gained vital, firsthand exposure to standard operations in the chemical engineering field.

Prof. Praveen Kumar Surolia, Ph.D., Head of the Department of Chemistry at Manipal University Jaipur, recently visited the University of Santo Tomas to advance an ongoing collaboration with CHE Faculty, Engr. Edgar Clyde R. Lopez, Ph.D., under the ASEAN-India Collaborative R&D Scheme. This joint initiative focuses on developing novel ternary photocatalysts for the degradation of water pollutants.
During his engagement in the Philippines from April 15 to 27, 2026, Prof. Surolia participated in several key activities to strengthen academic and research ties. On April 21, he delivered a talk at the Engineering Conference Hall, presenting updates on the current status and progress of their joint research. Broadening the scope of his visit, he also toured the UST Manila Annex (City of Santa Rosa) alongside faculty members from the Department of Chemical Engineering, led by Prof. Philipina A. Marcelo, Ph.D., Assistant to the Rector for UST Manila Annex (City of Santa Rosa).
This visit reaffirms the Department’s strong commitment to sustained international collaboration, grounded in shared expertise, mutual trust, and a clear research agenda. Continued partnerships of this nature strengthen the exchange of knowledge, expand research capacity, and open pathways for joint scientific contributions that address pressing global challenges. The Department remains dedicated to deepening these connections and advancing meaningful, high-impact collaborative work with its international partners.
