LEAD LIKE THE BABAYLANS, FILIPINAS!
The Food Development Center (FDC) joins in the celebration of National Women’s Month 2026. On this day, let us remember the life and achievements of a powerful woman in the field of food science, María Orosa y Ylagan (November 29, 1892 – February 13, 1945).
She is often regarded as the “First Filipina Food Technologist.” Credited for pioneering techniques in food processing and preservation, she developed a food product using available and abundant produce that satisfied the delicate and unique taste of Filipinos: banana ketchup. FDC recognizes her contributions to the field of food science and her drive to promote local products. Just as the Babaylans were a special breed of determined women leaders long ago, María Orosa y Ylagan remains an epitome of substance, leadership, and knowledge.
