History / Background
“Sir Shah Nawaz Bhutto Memorial Library Larkano” was established by Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, the then Prime Minister of Islamic Republic of Pakistan, in memory of his late father, Sir Shah Nawaz Bhutto, who also worked as Dewan or Prime Minister of Princely State of Junagadh. History / Background
“Sir Shah Nawaz Bhutto Memorial Library Larkano” was established by Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, the then Prime Minister of Islamic Republic of Pakistan, in memory of his late father, Sir Shah Nawaz Bhutto, who also worked as Dewan or Prime Minister of Princely State of Junagadh. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto laid foundation stone of the said building in mid 1970s which was constructed and completed in the year 1976.
Unfortunately, after imposition of Martial Law by Gen. Zia-ul-Haq, in 1977, and dissolution of democratic government, the Army authorities occupied this building and used it for their own purpose, up to 1983. Thereafter, this building was vacated by them. Mr. Mohammad Hashim Memon, the then Deputy Commissioner Larkano, set up the building for library purpose and got it inaugurated by Mr. Ilahi Bux Soomro Ex-Federal Minister for Industries on 27-10-1984. Since then, the library is functioning smoothly and large number of people have benefited from this service.In 1987, Culture Department, Government of Sindh, took over the administrative control of the library building. During the regime of Shaheed Muhtarma Benazir Bhutto extension wing was approved and constructed, adjacent to the main building, to expand the facilities for literate youth and other citizens of Larkano District.
Collection of Books and Periodicals
There are 79,255 books available in the library on different subjects in different languages including English, Urdu and Sindhi. A number of daily newspapers and periodicals are also available in the library.
