"The Runaway Dog" by Joshua Chiang
This piece was commissioned by Mine-Ex, an organisation dedicated to helping landmine survivors rebuild their lives.
I wanted to avoid the common trope of portraying survivors as victims in need, so I depicted these individuals as ordinary people, as capable of a good laugh as anyone else. By replacing pity with a "piled up" moment of everyday comedy, the piece highlights the resilience and agency of the survivors, showing that their lives are defined by their spirit and humour rather than their circumstances.
Now exhibiting in Plantation Urban Resort & Spa, No 28 St 184 Phnom Penh. This framed art is available for sale at $138, with all proceeds going directly to Mine-Ex.
DM me for more information.

It was supposed to be a palette-cleanser before my next big month-long piece of work to be done in a matter of hours over the weekend with soft pastels based on a digital sketch which was itself based on a silly pun I came up with. You know it's not meant to be taken too seriously because I didn't even set up my easel to do the work. And you know I didn't take it seriously enough at first because I first drew it on an A4 paper.
And then predictably, the crazy took over, and four days and a very dirty table later, I finally finished the not-to-be-taken-too-seriously-but-somehow-treated-with-a-great-deal-of-seriousness piece of work 'The Sun-bearable Ligntness of Being'.
Production of prints begins in a month's time, but pre-orders are open. A3 prints $28 USD, and A4, $18 USD. Free delivery within Cambodia, Singapore postal rates apply within Singapore, and international postal rates apply for deliveries from Cambodia to elsewhere.
