U.S. Exits WHO: Trump's First Major Move Shakes Global Health Community
Nightfam, an important change has occurred in global health politics that affects us all.
President Trump has officially initiated the process to withdraw the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO), potentially ending a 75-year partnership that has significantly influenced modern global health response.
The WHO is losing its largest financial contributor, and public health experts are expressing concerns about the potential impact on global disease prevention and response efforts.
Trump signed the executive order on January 20, 2025, marking the second time in less than five years he's ordered withdrawal from WHO. In the first attempt, Biden reversed the process when he took office.
The U.S. contributed $1.284 billion to WHO in 2022-2023, more than any other country.
Trump's reasons include claims of WHO mishandling the COVID-19 pandemic response, allegations of the organization being "controlled by China," and arguments that Americans pay unfairly high contributions compared to other nations.
This raises important questions: In a world where diseases don't respect borders, how will this decision affect global health cooperation? What might be the implications for handling future pandemics, tracking disease outbreaks, and protecting people across borders?
What do you think, Nightfam? Is this a move towards accountability or a step back for global health cooperation?
