Week one of this year’s Twin Harbors Skill Center Fire Science Boot Camp is officially in the books, and we at the Aberdeen Fire Department couldn’t be prouder of these hardworking high school students. While many kids their age are enjoying a relaxing summer break, these motivated young individuals are suiting up in sweat-soaked bunker gear, learning search and rescue techniques, ladder operations, and emergency medical care.
Public education comes in many forms, and helping prepare the next generation of firefighters is one of the most rewarding opportunities we have. Watching these students push themselves reminds us of when we first started out, and it’s an honor to be a part of their journey.
Great job, everyone. You’re doing amazing, and you should be incredibly proud of yourselves. Get some well‑earned rest this weekend—and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. We’ll be ready to turn up the heat again on Monday for Week 2!

Today in Aberdeen Fire History – June 9, 2018
At 0927 hours, Aberdeen Fire was dispatched to a fire alarm activation at the Aberdeen Senior Center located at 117 E 3rd St. The Senior Center shares a building with the Aberdeen Museum of History.
Battalion 10 (B10) was first to respond and, while en route, noticed a black smoke column and immediately called a second alarm. Upon arrival, B10 noticed fire had vented through the roof, and a third alarm, which calls in all off-duty personnel and a request to other agencies to respond, was requested due to the rapidly evolving conditions. Crews attempted interior operations, but quickly reported that their fire streams were having no effect due to the high fire load. Conditions deteriorated rapidly, forcing crews to transition to a defensive strategy.
Firefighting operations continued for nearly eight hours before crews could safely demobilize. In total, over 75 personnel responded, including mutual aid from Thurston County.
At the time, the Senior Center was equipped with a fire alarm system; however, the museum was not. This allowed the fire to grow undetected within the museum until smoke reached the Senior Center and triggered the alarm, delaying initial detection and response.
