Michael Jack Herd, 67, was born on August 16, 1955 in Hamlin, Texas and passed November 10, 2022.
Mike is survived by his wife Kelly, son Chris and daughter-in-law LeAnn, sisters Sondi and Becky, stepsons Vance and girlfriend Renee, and John, grandchildren Kainen, Adison, Braden, Morgan, Anthony, Parker and an army of friends.
Throughout his life Mike had many adventures. He was a photographer, martial artist, law enforcement officer, scuba diver, parachutist, journalist, musician, fi****ms instructor, history buff, sergeant at arms for the local Sons of Confederate Veterans camp.
Mike had a passion for teaching people how to defend themselves. As a Texas License to Carry Handgun instructor he traveled the state for his students. He wrote the “Gun Stuff” article in the Buffalo Gap Round-up News for many years. Mike was a proud Texan and a United States Army Veteran.
He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

As Abilene ISD begins school name change discussion, crowd gathers in support
Abilene ISD said an overwhelming majority of messages from the public was in favor of changing the names of Jackson, Johnston and two other schools.

McMurry Professor Offers Free Course on Texas History
Want to learn more about Texas history?
McMurry University History Professor Dr. Stephen Hardin, a recognized expert on Texas history and the Alamo, will be teaching his Texas history class each Monday from 6-9 p.m. beginning January 22, and is offering it as a free non-credit class to the first 12 people in the community who sign up.
Dr. Hardin is a specialist in Texas, military, and social history. His numerous publications range from the award-winning Texian Illiad: A Military History of the Texas Revolution to, most recently, Texian Macabre: The Melancholy Tale of a Hanging in Early Houston, a fascinating study of early Houston society. In addition to his writing and teaching activities, Hardin has also provided specialist commentary on the A&E Network, the History Channel, the Discovery Network, and NBC’s TODAY show. He was elected a Fellow of the Texas State Historical Association in 2009.
